STARBASE BREWING LIGHTHOUSE MUSIC SERIES WINTER 2024 SCHEDULE

From playing Dallas area songwriter hangouts as a teenager, to being tour support for dozens of national major artists, and constantly performing from the southernmost tip of Texas, to all points north, Mark Allan Atwood has been spreading his stories and original songs across the Lone Star State for 40+ years.

A four-time Texas Music Awards recipient (including Best Male Vocalist 2013), Atwood has scored a handful of Texas radio successes from five full-length albums of his own creations, from an award winning debut, How Country, in 2009, to his latest, Old Scars & Sandbars, from March of 2023. Both "Happy Thoughts" and "Pedal Down Life" from that most recent album, reached new heights with fans of independent music, in Texas and nationwide.

A resident of what he calls "Almost Mexico" (South Padre Island) for 8 years, Atwood has played to thousands of island visitors, but has been back on the byways of TX full time since the summer of '22, performing his musical stories of right and wrong, love and loss, and the occasional bit of poetry about bugs.

I have made a comfortable living as a Performing Songwriter for over 40 years now.  This IS my day job, it's what I do... and I have never been fired from a gig:  I don't suck.

I play guitar and sing.  Mostly by myself, but if you have the cash, I can add as many folks on stage with me as you can afford.   Although I hate it when an Artist tells you who they sound like... if  it helps you paint a mental picture:  I sound like me.  BUT, I have been heavily influenced by folks like Jackson Browne,  Guy Clark, Lyle Lovett, Jimmy Buffet, Robert Earl Keen, Jerry Jeff Walker... you get the idea.  So, I kinda work in that vein.  I tell a story, I sing a song, I talk to the audience, I sing a song, I tell a story, I sing a song... it goes like that for the length of time I'm supposed to be on stage.  Then, I get off stage and hang with who-ever is still around until we get kicked out.  I'll sign anything, and I don't mind selfies.

I have 6 CD's released.  I have gotten radio airplay on all of them; I don't suck.

Part Texas, part Bakersfield, part old school and new, Jenni Dale Lord has created a style all its own, blending elements of country, rock, and blues into one tasty emulsification.

Jenni Dale Lord rocked the live music capital of the world, Austin, Texas, for over a decade, but has since returned to her roots in Lubbock to claim her place in the West Texas music scene.  After years of writing music on her own, Jenni Dale rounded up a group of amazing musicians to take her songs and set them on fire. Their high-energy and heartstring-pulling show entertains audiences far and wide.

Recognized by the Texas Regional Radio Music Association, Jenni Dale Lord has received several nominations for new female vocalist of the year, and most recently, female vocalist of the year. She has also been nominated for Female Artist of the Year for multiple publications including Texas Internet Radio Chart.

The Magnolia Band has been bringing their own brand of Americana and country music to audiences across the country for the past decade. With Andrea Marie at the helm on lead vocals and guitar, The band showcases original songs and a repertoire of tributes covering everyone from Merle Haggard to Fleetwood Mac.

It’s not surprising that audiences instantly warm to their blend of classic country with folk, jazz, and nostalgic pop influences. Andrea has been immersed since childhood in the warm, dusty, boundary-pushing Willie Nelson vibe that the region’s cowboys, hippies, college kids, and everyone in between have loved for generations.  Echoes of vocalists both classic (Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt) and recent (Norah Jones, Sheryl Crow) find their way into “Magnolia Music”, and Andrea Marie has been one of only a handful of female artists breaking through to the Texas Country scene in recent years.

Every time he steps on stage, Dallas Burrow dedicates a portion of his set to telling a story about his dad. The New Braunfels native has music in his blood, and he likes to share some of that history. One of his favorite stories to tell is about a night in Nashville in the early 70s, when Burrow’s father, Mike Burrow, was hosting Richard Dobson, John Lomax III, and Townes Van Zandt at a pub he ran with his siblings on Elliston Place near the old Exit/In. After a late night shutting down the bar, the foursome hit an after party, where Van Zandt insisted they all become blood brothers to ensure they’d be forever cosmically linked. Everyone agreed, and perhaps through some mystical, intangible power that often propels so much music, Van Zandt’s style has been transfused into Burrow more than any other artist. After telling the story around that night in Nashville, Burrow can’t help but play at least one Townes song during his sets. As he began writing his stellar new LP, Blood Brothers, Burrow’s friend and producer, Jonathan Tyler, encouraged him to finally turn that touching tribute to his dad into a song. That stirring track became the guiding light and philosophy of his 2023 album of the same name, which is to pay homage to his musical roots, while honoring his familial duties as a husband and father

At age 22, Andi picked up an old acoustic guitar after she had her son so she could write her own songs and sing to her new born.  Even though she had been singing her whole life, singing while playing the guitar quickly went from a hobby to a passion.  Andi wrote and wrote and then wrote some more.   As the music and lyrics poured out of her,  she performed across Southern Texas in festivals and fairs.  Spending some time as a musician in the few years following, it never became full time.  Her life as a single mom, raising her son and  working full time kept her very busy.  It was the life she wanted and loved with no regrets.

Meredith Crawford has successfully taken something with a very definitive shape, and made it seem shapeless. Historically speaking, that kind of dreamy musical witchcraft has only been successfully accomplished by the likes of timeless wonder-women like Patsy Cline, Stevie Nicks, or the queen: Aretha Franklin; herself.” Sitting in church surrounded by strangers, Meredith found herself singing at a young age in the crowd. It was a humble way to be introduced to music, but it was pure. She found people weren't so much strangers anymore when you sang with them. Soon after picking out harmonies from the pew, she found herself touring the Texas Opry circuit by the age of 16, but it wasn't until she got a guitar in her hands and a lyric up her sleeve that she found her true passion, songwriting

DALLAS BURROW SEPT 1ST

2022 SONGWRITER OF THE YEAR

A Texas-born Americana artist rooted in the tradition of his home state's songwriting heroes, Dallas Burrow built a career on both sides of the Atlantic with his 2019 debut, Southern Wind. Recorded in Nashville, the album reached Number 25 on the UK Americana Chart and Number 4 on the US Alt-Country chart, paving the way for a string of cross-country shows alongside fellow road warriors like Charley Crockett. For Burrow — a lifelong explorer who'd spent his 20s on the move, chasing his muse across most of America and Europe while rubbing shoulders with luminaries like Bob Dylan and Dr. John — being so far away from home felt natural. Even so, he began missing the stability of his new life back in Texas, where he'd built a family and gotten sober. His second album, 2021's Dallas Burrow, marks both a symbolic and literal homecoming for the songwriter, who recorded the new material with modern-day legend Bruce Robison in the rural Texas countryside. It's a record about embracing maturity and the responsibilities of family life, sung by Burrow in a voice that bears both the road-worn weariness of a lifelong highwayman and the fierce fire of a man reborn. -Andrew Leahey

AUSTIN MAYSE & MARK ALLAN ATWOOD

Texas-born singer-songwriter Austin Mayse has returned to the studio for his second full-length album, Bridges & Kerosene.  Produced by Hill Country music ace Chris Beall and engineered by Ron Flynt, it features songs that Mayse has brought to soulful solo life onstage in recent years, fleshed out to a fuller potential by legendary Texas musicians including Geoff Queen, Rich Brotherton, Tina & Walt Wilkins, Ron Flynt, Harmoni Kelley, John Chipman, Beall, as well as 4x CMA Musician of the Year, Jenny Fleenor on violin.

Songs like "Wretch Like Me," "Rattlesnake" and "Sober Light" come heavy with insight and philosophy; lighter fare like "Leave Your Leavin'" and "On My Way" lay things out more simply, weaving bits of wit and metaphor into catchy, breezier tracks that draw on the sounds and influences of Lone Star State music titans like Rusty Wier, Jerry Jeff Walker, Walt Wilkins and BW Stevenson.  The legacy of Wier in particular informs Mayse's music; Mayse befriended the genre-hopping legend of a singer-songwriter early in his career, traveling and gigging with him extensively.  In fact, Wier's last recording studio visit before his 2009 passing was a guest vocal on Mayse's debut album Devil On My Shoulder.

The years since then have seen Mayse come and go from the live-music scene as real-life ups and downs demanded.  Having played trumpet in orchestras professionally since his teens, he's backed up bands of various genres and gigged with his friends in fellow under-the-radar indie act The Great American Boxcar Chorus along with picking up his guitar for solo gigs and song swaps around his home state.  With fresh material comes fresh momentum: Mayse is excited to share his newest work to receptive audiences anywhere the road might take him, whether that's in person or on the finely-crafted, fully realized record Bridges & Kerosene.

JEFF HOPSON & MARK ALLAN ATWOOD

Jeff Hopson is as well-rounded a songwriting philosopher as any that have gone before.  Born in David Crockett’s back yard.  Raised up and grounded in chapter and verse, the brand of southern spirituality that turns some folks rigid and frees others to wander and explore.  Jeff’s the latter.  Like Crockett, ultimately a Texan by choice.  With thirty some-odd years now under the old Lone Star – he’s had a better run than Davy’s.  Big chunks of those years were spent with touring bands, back when the ‘90s brand of new traditional country seemed like a shining bright hope.  Bigger chunks as his own wandering minstrel self, a guitar-slinging sage wielding lines no one’s thought of attempting since Kristofferson was a young buck.  His debut album, ‘Heretic,’ changed the game and reset all the standards in the North Texas music scene.  Top to bottom as solid a collection of songwriting as some artists compile in an entire career.  Hank’s anguish, Waylon’s presence, Mike Ness’ anger, and, most importantly, Jeff’s well-seasoned and lived in words.  Even some hints of faith in there, the kind that gets real as religion’s façade fades in the rearview. Hopson makes music for people who are unafraid to think and compelled to feel.  Writes songs that give us all mirrors to both the darkest and best parts of our tattered and battered souls.  Makes us sing along and like it as we examine the wreckage and triumphs of our lives.

MIKE ETHAN MESSICK & MARK ALLAN ATWOOD

Messick is a songwriter, first and foremost, with a knack and a passion for turning life’s ups and downs into vivid, tuneful and relatable stories set to music that ranges from classic country to ambitious folk-rock. Growing up in Baytown, Texas, he fell in love with his dad’s eclectic record collection and started the long and rewarding process of developing his own sound and style through years of playing open mic nights and small venues around Central Texas. His self-released albums – 2006’s Bootlegger’s Turn, 2011’s The Only Easy Day Was Yesterday, and now 2017’s How Close We Came – reflect the influence of titans like Steve Earle, John Prine, and Billy Joe Shaver, filtered through his own literary eye for detail and gritty but ultimately optimistic voice. Messick has garnered independent radio play from Texas to Australia with songs like “American Steel” and “Oldsmobile,” scored songwriting cuts on other artists’ albums and setlists (including Roger Creager’s take on “The Everclear Song,” one of the most popular hits of the Texas country music explosion), appeared several times on the Texas Music Scene TV show, and played alongside fellow Texans including Hayes Carll, Randy Rogers, and Ray Wylie Hubbard. The new album How Close We Came was recorded at Austin’s legendary Cedar Creek Studios with producer John Ross Silva and musicians including David Abeyta, Cody Foote, Scott Davis, Geoff Queen, Jamie Lin Wilson and Wade Josey

TOMMY ALVERSON

“Arlington's Tommy Alverson should be the permanent face of the independent Texas country music movement. He embodies all the hallmarks of the sound, and the mind-set. Alverson is Lone Star proud. He's artistically beholden to nobody but himself. He loves Americana music, that decidedly Texas blend of country, swing, Tex-Mex, Southern rock, folk and blues. He writes songs, but also has no qualms about recording good material from somebody else's pen. He's made a living playing music his way. Texas One More Time is Alverson's ninth disc in a career that has been incredibly steady. He's carved a livelihood playing and recording the music he cherishes in the state he calls home. That's the epitome of successful. He doesn't need anything else.”
