Hello! I am Hongyu Yi (pronounced “Hong-yoo Ee”), a first-year PhD student in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Washington, advised by Jing Yu. I received my M.Phil. in Computer and Information Engineering and B.Sc. in Mathematics at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHK-Shenzhen), where I worked with Chenye Wu.
My research interests lie in learning, control, and optimization theory with applications in sustainable energy systems/transportation systems. Additionally, I collaborate closely with Chenbei Lu.

Stillness and Rupture / 静水与天裂 - Jul. 2026
Recently, I have found myself deeply drawn to a particular kind of beauty: the sudden collapse of a world that had, only moments before, appeared perfectly still.
我喜欢那种先是平静碧波,随后惊涛裂岸的时刻;也喜欢天地已经崩塌之后,一切又缓缓归于沉寂。真正打动我的,并不只是激烈或悲伤,而是两者之间巨大的反差:serenity before catastrophe, and silence after rupture——灾变之前的宁静,以及破碎之后近乎残酷的无言。这种巨大的张力给我一种关于生命的震撼和感动。
白先勇写失去相伴一生的爱人,先写两棵树之间留下的空缺,那里仍是“湛湛青空,悠悠白云”,而后才说,那是一道“女娲炼石也无法弥补的天裂”。天空越晴朗,缺口便越无法遮掩。The world does not collapse with thunder; it remains beautiful, and that is precisely what makes the loss unbearable.
《琵琶行》中的情绪也沿着这样的轨迹展开:

間關鶯語花底滑,幽咽泉流冰下難。
冰泉冷澀絃凝絕,凝絕不通聲暫歇。
別有幽愁暗恨生,此時無聲勝有聲。
銀瓶乍破水漿迸,鐵騎突出刀槍鳴。
曲終收撥當心畫,四絃一聲如裂帛。
東舟西舫悄無言,唯見江心秋月白。
....
声音先如莺语、泉流,渐渐凝滞,直到一切停顿;随后却骤然“银瓶乍破”“铁骑突出”,像被压抑已久的世界终于从内部炸裂。可在最强烈的一声“裂帛”之后,并没有更多宣泄,只剩下江心一轮秋月。The music rises from restraint to devastation, only to dissolve into moonlight.
我也喜欢歌词里相似的瞬间 (余震-张敬轩 (作词: 潘源良)):
....
再走近,是我完全难自禁。
就算知道实在太愚笨,
到底一刻也算是缘份,天地沦陷。
余震是痛苦中,一丝兴奋。
...
“天地沦陷”并不是宏大的外部灾难,而是一个人再走近一步时,私人情感突然扩张到足以摧毁整个世界。Even the aftermath becomes an “aftershock”: pain, desire, and exhilaration lingering in the same trembling instant.
还有东邪 (张天赋,作词: 林若宁) 里,平静碧海被往事骤然掀翻:
平靜碧海,泛起往事似浪濤,
破船被一段回憶狠狠俘虜。
……
無論洶湧浪花淹沒歲月流,
盼人面仿若桃花,始終錦繡。
记忆像浪涛一样摧毁眼前的平静,但风浪过去,人面桃花仍停留在想象深处,不曾衰败。The sea is violent, yet the remembered face remains untouched by time.
我喜欢的,或许正是这种张力:平静并非风暴的反面,而是风暴得以发生的背景;沉默也并非情绪的消失,而是情绪已经强烈到语言无法继续。
A calm sea can contain the memory of a shipwreck.
A clear sky can hold an irreparable rift.
And sometimes, after heaven and earth have collapsed, all that remains is the white autumn moon upon the river.
