本郷の地名の由来

横浜市栄区の本郷は、かつて存在した「本郷村」に由来しています。本郷村は、現在の栄区の東側の大部分の地域を占めていて、JR根岸線「本郷台駅」の駅名などにもその名が残っています。

本郷村は、鎌倉郡に属していて、1889（明治22）年に笠間、小菅ケ谷、公田、桂、中野、鍛冶ケ谷、上野の各村が合併して誕生しました。

栄区の区名は、公募により決定されましたが、住民から最も支持された候補は「本郷区」でした。

本郷、豊田の両地区の共栄を期し、新しい区として未来に向けて、大きく栄えていくことを祈願して

「栄区」と名付けられました。

Hongo in Sakae Ward, Yokohama City, is derived from the former "Hongo Village." Hongo Village occupied most of the eastern part of the current Sakae Ward, and its name remains in the name of the JR Negishi Line's "Hongo-dai Station." 

Hongo Village belonged to Kamakura County, and was created in 1889 (Meiji 22) when the villages of Kasama, Kosugegaya, Koda, Katsura, Nakano, Kajigaya, and Ueno merged. 

The name of Sakae Ward was decided through a public contest, and the candidate that received the most support from residents was "Hongo Ward."

The name "Sakae Ward" was chosen in hopes of the mutual prosperity of both Hongo and Toyoda districts, and in the hope that the new ward would flourish in the future.
