My name is Hongjian Wang 王鴻漸. I am an Associate Professor of Chinese at Purdue University, where I am affiliated with such interdisciplinary programs as Asian Studies, Comparative Literature, and Film and Video Production.
I received my Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from University of California, Riverside, where my study focused on modern Chinese literature, nineteenth-century British literature, and film studies. Before joining Purdue, I was an Assistant Professor of Chinese at University of Arkansas.
I do research broadly on modern Chinese literature, film, theatre, media, and cultural history, with a focus on the ever-changing dynamics among the state, the cultural elite, and the populace, especially expressed in the "performativity" in modern Chinese literature and art.
At Purdue, I teach classes on Chinese language, modern Chinese literature, cinema, and theatre. I work closely with doctoral students in the Comparative Literature program on their dissertation projects related to various topics about modern China. I am also an enthusiast of extra-curricular activities and community outreach.
