Honeylocust, Shademaster
The ‘Shademaster’ Honeylocust (Gleditsia triacanthos var. inermis ‘Shademaster’) is a fast-growing, deciduous tree renowned for its adaptability and graceful form. It typically reaches a mature height of 45 to 70 feet with a spread of 30 to 50 feet. Its upright, vase-shaped canopy and fine-textured, fern-like foliage provide dappled shade, beneficial for lawns and understory plants. This thornless and seedless cultivar grows rapidly, averaging 2 to 4 feet per year during its first 15 years. It thrives in full sun and tolerates various soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils, as well as urban conditions, drought, and pollution. In autumn, its foliage turns a vibrant yellow, adding seasonal interest.
