Pope sighed as he pulled into the pier parking lot. He looked back at you and JJ and asks, “Are you sure it’s here?”
“It was the address that was in the file,” replies JJ, your boyfriend. “But he probably just gave a fake address. I mean, that’s what I would have done.”
“I don’t know about this…” Pope says. “I think I’m going to keep looking.”
“I don’t know, but now I need some fresh air.” JJ opens his door and waits for you to come out, “Might as well take a look around.”
“Have fun.” Pope gives you guys a ‘Peace out.’
“Oh, we will.” JJ salutes him as he drives away. You wave.
The two of you walk along the pier. It’s a beautiful day out. The sun is soft and bright, without stinging your skin, and the ocean breeze is there to cool you down if it does get too warm. This is paradise. Walking with JJ. It could be even better though.
“So what’s our plan if we actually find this killer?” you ask.
“Run. That’s–I’m kidding. We detain, extract, investigate.”
“How are we going to detain?”
“Uh, sneak up on him, attack him.”
“Like we’re undercover. I like it. Just act like we’re on a date.”
“Yeah.”
“If you know what that looks like.”
He stops to look at you, “What do you mean if I know what that looks like?”
“I mean, we’ve never been on a date.”
He continues walking, “We’ve been on a date.”
It’s your turn to stop. “When? Name one. Just one.”
His face makes it obvious he can’t. He grabs your hand. “We’re on a date right now.”
You grin. “Okay.”
“We’re on a date.”
“We're on a date. Doing date things.”
“Just a normal couple, strolling on the pier.”
“Exactly.”
“You think two spies would maybe get a snow cone?” You nod your head toward the stand.
He smiles at you. “I think they would.”
“Snow cones-whatever flavor. Surprise me.” You hand the snow cone guy some money.
“I gotchu,” The guy says and hands you guys a set of refreshing snow cones.
“Thank you sir. Well done.” JJ accepts the snowcones.
“Cheers!” You say.
You both down your snow cones and make your way to the end of the pier.
“So, should we jump off this thing?” you ask.
“Whoa now,” JJ says, looking a little nervous, his unruly blond hair fluttering in his eyes.
“Come on, it’ll be fun after being cooped up.”
“Okay. I will if you will.”
“Is that, uh, a dare?” you ask, mischievously.
“Sure. As a matter of fact, it is.”
“Okay then.”
“So I guess we gotta get up there.”
“Okay.” You get up.
“Okay.” He gets up right next to you.
“Let’s do it.”
“Okay, are we doing this?”
“I’m up here aren’t I?” Your palms are starting to sweat.
He starts a count. “One. Two.”
“Three!” you both yell as you jump off.
The water is shockingly cold at first, but then you find it cools you right down. You splash around with JJ for a moment, yelling, “We did it!”
“That’s a lot farther than I thought!” JJ says, which makes you laugh.
You both play around in the water for a bit before heading back to shore where you sit together and shoot the breeze. You sit in your little corner of paradise alone with JJ who seems to be just as happy with you as you are with him. You enjoy the beach until a few more of the pogues and Sarah Cameron show up. But for now, life is perfect and whatever dangers lie ahead, you’ll sleep soundly at night knowing that you’ll do it together with JJ.
