PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The renovation at Pamlico Road is a true collaboration between architect and interior designer. The interior designer and homeowner presented the architect with a very clear vision for updating the residence after the freeze of 2021. Her desire was to create a modern floor planned residence while preserving the traditional exterior style of the home.

We began the project with a basic sketch and a set of project goals.  Trading sketches back and forth, we were able to utilize the client goals and fine tune the floor plan to meet the needs of the family. The ideas of increased natural light, better flow for entertaining spaces and ensuite bathrooms for all bedrooms helped us filter through options and narrow down the plan. Once the layout was defined, we focused on the details of individual spaces such as a new master bath, 30-foot sliding glass doors, and custom millwork throughout.

The original 5,100 square foot house had a lovely, classic exterior which was completely preserved. On the front face of the house, a symmetrical series of tall windows created a perfectly balanced brick façade with a tall metal mansard roof. The original interior floor plan featured a large central living space with a series of smaller, enclosed rooms around the perimeter and additional living rooms and carport at the rear. (See original plan to the right).

To preserve the main exterior face of the house, the front entry foyer was saved and expanded to include a built in, floating credenza. This intimate room opens to the new sitting parlor on the left and the living straight ahead. The steel and glass front door provides natural light and views through the living room into the back yard.

The revised plan centralized the living, dining, kitchen and lounge and pushed the bedrooms and secondary spaces such as laundry, pantry, powder and mudroom into the side wings. The old kitchen became the new laundry, the old dining/ breakfast nook became kitchen, and two new powders were added throughout the house.  If you look closely at the kitchen windows they extend down beyond the countertop.  This was an intentional choice to keep the exterior windows of the home. We suggest you look up close how this was detailed upon your visit. Other changes included swapping the guest bedroom closest to the entry foyer with the informal den and enlarging the foyer to have a glass door and a custom floating credenza.

Each of the bedrooms are small suites featuring a walk-in closet, a large bathroom and well-planned bedroom. Each child was able to participate in the design of their space. Please ask about these spaces during the tour. The primary suite was completely reworked. The bedroom space features a hidden work area and tv watching zone. The bathroom is a classic layout with a free-standing tub in front of a large window. In the closet custom millwork and raised ceilings maximized storage for the homeowner.

The role of the architect in this project was to capture the desires of the interior designer through traditional permit drawings, provide support in design in designated areas that required additional layout design, implement our knowledge in structural framing to evaluate cost effective solutions, collaborate with the structural engineer for framing plans, and utilize three-dimensional cabinet design to create a set of drawings for the custom millwork.

The largest structural changes to the home included raising all ceilings from 8ft to 9’-6” where possible, removing the existing fireplace and adding a new fireplace, and extending the back porch to create an outdoor living space and chef’s kitchen.

The use of large glass sliding doors in the house blurs the lines between interior and exterior.  Western Windows Systems were selected for their ease of operation, clean profile and longevity. The primary suite, living, dining and den all feature 9-foot-tall sliding glass doors that lead out to the pool area. These doors provide multiple access points throughout the house between conditioned spaces and outdoor entertainment. This results in a great flow for everyday usage and larger festivities. Early communication regarding the desire for a pool, covered outdoor living and outdoor kitchen to be included in the project resulted in the perfect depth of the covered space and the distance from the pool to the house.

The kitchen is the heart of the home for this family with two children. It features Sub Zero Fridges and Freezers and a Wolf range. All appliances are paneled for a consistent kitchen appearance.  A large coffee bar across from the kitchen helps to further define the kitchen and create an intimate space within a larger, open area.

The architectural portion of this project from start to finish was three months. Every decision was made quickly, which is attributed to fantastic communication between the homeowners. The construction portion of the project took sixteen months, which is quick for this level of finish and care. The success of this project is due to collaboration between all parties: architect, engineer, homeowners, interior design team and contractor.
