My decade-long journey in Science and Engineering is largely driven by intellectual curiosity. Learning programming in Grade 7 was the beginning. Throughout my teens, I participated in competitive programming contests. This gave me an exciting opportunity to learn and solve problems with fundamental algorithms and data structures in computer science. My reading on discrete math and combinatorics made me realize that Math is what behind all those magic algorithms.
I chose to pursue a B.S. degree in Math at Fudan University in 2011 because I wanted to build a solid foundation of knowledge for my future career. Just as I expected, the world of mathematics is wonderful. The rigorous and intense training in math enables me to master new knowledge and skills fast. Most importantly, I established a mathematical way of thinking.
I strongly believe that the value of Math lies in its application in the real world. In 2015, I entered the University of Michigan to pursue a PhD degree in Applied and Interdisciplinary Mathematics, where I started my transition from a learner to a contributor.
During my years in graduate school, I worked closely with researchers from engineering departments. Turning my mathematical insights and skills in computer science into tangible and novel tools in engineering, e.g., efficient numerical solvers, is always an exhilarating part of my work. I know that communicating ideas is as important as coming up with new ones. I not only gave talks and wrote papers about my own work but also taught several undergraduate courses as the primary instructor. I am glad to see my expertise in math helps others.
I never stop learning. In addition to taking graduate-level courses in cutting-edge topics like Machine Learning, High Performance Computing, I seized every chance to obtain new knowledge. For example, I joined a reading group for rigorous stochastic analysis, participated in Kaggle competitions, built my own mini software with Python, took online courses at Coursera.
I look forward to the next phase of my journey.
