Carol
Our frail relative lived in Pietermaritzburg. He had no friends or relatives near him. My husband and I live in the UK. I did research, and contacted Nightingale Homecare. They do not provide a nursing pop in service but recommended Hilary, a retired nurse, who does provide this service.
Hilary took on the task to care for this stubborn 90-year-old who insisted he did not need help. He had refused to see a doctor for many years and did not want treatment. Through lots of perseverance, Hilary put up with his stubborn nature and she saw him through many weeks, checking up on his needs, organising his shopping, and offering to clean and help in any way. He was not the sort of person who showed any appreciation so it was a tough assignment. My husband flew out to see his father and managed to take him to a doctor. He had serious untreated cancer, and was in severe pain. Through Hospice he could have strong pain relief.
Thankfully he allowed Hilary to help him more. As he deteriorated she organised a small team to visit him twice a day, sometimes more often, to care for him and administer his pain medication.
Hilary always gave us immediate feedback each time she visited him. Through Whatsapp she kept us informed and involved in decisions. This progressed to 24-hour care. His frailty and pain were carefully managed by Hilary and Carmen. In the final week Hilary also organised the night duty. My nephew flew up from Cape Town, and he was very grateful and full of appreciation for Hilary, Carmen and Joey. My father-in-law died, peaceful, clean, with fresh dressings.
Hilary's support extended to us as well, with her WhatsApp messages and advice. She helped organise things in the days immediately after, such as the house clean-up and the keys. We felt extremely fortunate to have found Hilary, a wonderful person and I recommend her and her team of carers, very highly.
