Have you ever been in a situation, where you cannot find your keys to something? We’ve all been there, may it be the key to your safe or maybe a drawer where you hide your belongings from kids. Or maybe it’s something more serious like your apartment’s keys.
Finding the right locksmith, especially when it’s an emergency (which it probably is), isn’t an easy job. To find the right locksmith, you need to know a few things.
Researching a locksmith before hiring is of paramount importance. Because after getting access to your locks and keys, it’s not hard for them to duplicate them and in the worst-case scenario, rob your house in your absence. Locksmiths need to have an ID at least. Check for their ID and proof that they are the real deal before letting them touch anything. And even after that, look closely at what they are doing to minimize the risk of them trying to do anything wrong. If you feel like they might’ve made extra copies or they felt fishy but you were in an emergency. It’s recommended that you get the lock changed as soon as you can by a trustworthy locksmith.
When you’re in an emergency, locksmiths look at that as an opportunity to earn more. It’s a common practice among locksmiths, as soon as they arrive at the site, the first thing they look at is whether the person is in an emergency or not and if he/she is in an emergency, they start making excuses to increase their rates. If you are really in an emergency and you cannot afford to wait any longer, then you’ll have to pay extra. Otherwise, always discuss the rates over the phone in a casual tone making sure they don’t realize you are in an emergency and don’t let them as for more when they arrive. But if they still do ask for more and you think that the reason is legit, then you may pay as required.
Locksmiths like every other worker out there have specific business hours. No one likes to work outside their business hours and if you call a locksmith outside of that, there’s a high chance that they won’t even show up. And if they do show up, not only will they be in a bad mood, the only motivation they had to come in the first place is probably to ask for higher rates. So it’s recommended to always call your locksmith during the business hours and if it’s an emergency, try and fix rates before they reach the site.
Don’t wait until a mishap happens. Because when you’re in an emergency and are in a hurry, there’s a high chance that you will end up making mistakes. So, it’s a good idea to be prepared. Always have a spare key hidden somewhere in your purse or somewhere accessible and safe. Look for a trustworthy locksmith beforehand and keep his number saved so you are prepared and calm at the time of emergency.
After they have completed the job, the locksmith should give you a receipt for their locksmith services. Even though the chances are really low for something bad to happen. That in no way means you get careless. There should be a proof of who worked on your lock and what you paid them. Keep the receipt safe for the future. A little common sense and attentiveness might save you from a lot of trouble.
