Moving can be a stressful experience for all of us, including our pets. For the purposes of this article we will focus on dogs and cats, but it may apply to all sorts of amazing companions.
Before the Move:
Let your fur baby be part of the packing experience! While you pack, allow your dog or cat to explore and smell the boxes or packing containers. This will help to peak their curiosity rather than promote anxiety. However, If you have hired a moving company to pack your items, have a responsible family member or friend watch over your pet.
Designate a box specifically for your pet’s items. These items include their collars, leashes, toys, waste bags, etc. This box should be loaded into the moving car last. Also, make sure to have a folder with your pet’s veterinary records and contact number. Lastly, have current photos of your furbaby, in case you become separated and need to make posters or flyers.
On Moving Day:
The day has arrived! You’re moving your items to your new home. While this may be a very exciting time, it is important to keep your pet safe and comfortable. While loading the truck, have a responsible family member watch over your pet or drive them over to a loyal pet-sitter. If you have to keep them at home during move day, make sure they are kept in a specific gated area. For your cat, it might be wise to have them in a cat carrier. In addition to this, make sure your pet is wearing their collar with their ID tags.
After the Move:
Your new home comes with new smells and sounds. While you or your contracted movers unload your items, have a responsible family member take your dog on a walk around the neighborhood. This will allow your pup to become familiar with new smells. It will also relax your pup and subdue any anxious energy.
After the movers or you are done unloading, the home exploring can begin! Bring in your pet and allow them to become familiar with their new space. Make sure to have an area designated for them to find their food and water bowls. Cats are typically more independent so allow them to explore their new home; they may even disappear for a few hours having a look around. Remember to stay calm and continue your pet’s usual routine- playtime & feeding schedule.
