Legacy of Sign Language Poetry:
Dorothy Miles, celebrated for her poetic brilliance, stands as a key figure in the literary heritage of sign language and the deaf community. Her impact on the world of sign language poetry is immeasurable, and it has been suggested that she is the wellspring from which much of today's sign language poetry flows. Her poetic verses, expressed through the grace and beauty of sign language, continue to inspire and empower generations.
Passionate Advocate for Deaf Issues:
Dorothy Miles was not only a poet but also a passionate advocate for deaf issues, culture, and sign language. Her fervour to bridge the gap between the deaf and hearing communities was evident in her life's work. She spent many years working with the BBC to produce television that catered to both hearing and hearing-impaired people that was described by the Radio Times as 'alluring, haunting and beautiful'.Through her poetry and advocacy, she sought to foster understanding, empathy, and connection between these two worlds.
The Dorothy Miles Cultural Centre:
In honour of Dorothy's profound influence and dedication to promoting British Sign Language (BSL) and deaf awareness, the Dorothy Miles Cultural Centre was established. This organisation, founded by a group of both Deaf and hearing friends, became a cherished institution in Surrey. It served as a beacon of BSL education and a hub for raising Deaf Awareness in the community. The centre was a testament to Dorothy's enduring legacy and her commitment to creating a more inclusive and connected society.
Dot Sign Language: Continuing the Mission:
After the closure of the Dorothy Miles Cultural Centre, Dot Sign Language proudly took up the mantle of spreading British Sign Language and advocating for Deaf Awareness. This organisation, inspired by Dorothy's vision, continues to offer qualifying BSL courses in Woking and Guildford, as well as Deaf Awareness workplace training. Dot Sign Language passionately dedicates many hours to community engagement, visiting schools, Scout troops, Brownies, and youth groups.
