Liedertafel HarmonieÂ
3:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Holy Family welcomes Liedertafel Harmonie to Oktoberfest 2024!
We are thrilled to feature Liedertafel Harmonie, a beloved Portland tradition since 1923, as part of our celebration this year. Their presence brings an authentic and joyful connection to German culture, music, and community — a perfect fit for our festival.
Liedertafel Harmonie has been a vital and vibrant link in the local and regional German community for over a century. The group is committed to continuing what the founding members cherished and sought to preserve: German songs, German culture, the German language, and German Gemütlichkeit — fostering strong and enduring friendships among choir members and their families, as well as with the broader community.
Today, Liedertafel Harmonie includes nearly 25 active singers who meet from September through May on Friday evenings at the German Haus of the German American Society in Northeast Portland. Singing under the direction of a professional conductor and accompanied by a talented pianist, rehearsals are followed by cheerful gatherings with coffee and traditional German desserts. The choir’s annual Spring and Christmas concerts are highlights of the year.
Liedertafel Harmonie is always happy to welcome visitors and new singers of all levels and backgrounds — no German language skills required!
The Tree Frogs
4:00 PM to 6:00 PM
Holy Family Oktoberfest proudly welcomes The Tree Frogs — Portland’s legendary organic rock pioneers — back to the stage for a very special performance!
The Tree Frogs, organic rock pioneers of Portland’s East Side Sound, played over 500 shows and traveled more than 60,000 miles during the 1990s. They toured relentlessly across the U.S. and Europe in support of three full-length releases: Tree Frogs Live! (1994), Leap Year (1996), and Live at the Laurelthirst (1997). Despite selling out 1,000-seat venues on tour, the demands of life on the road eventually took their toll, and the band went on hiatus in late 1997.
In 2000, the jam-band favorites returned to the stage, performing at local venues and festivals throughout the Pacific Northwest. From 2006 to 2015, they held a beloved Happy Hour residency at the Laurelthirst Public House. Their 25th Anniversary show in 2017 sold out, and now, for the first time in seven years, they’re reuniting with their iconic 1990s lineup.
“We are family,” says John Henry Bourke, singer-songwriter and rhythm guitarist for the band. “What started in a basement took us all around the world, and we want to celebrate a lifetime of playing music together. These days, we all have different projects and adult lives, so it’s really hard to find a date that works for all of us. But after all these years, there’s still something magical when the Tree Frogs take the stage.”
In the past two years, the Tree Frogs have lost cherished members of their extended musical family. Former bandmates Bob Wallace and Charlie Nanos passed away in 2023, and more recently, saxophonist Rob Matthews lost his wife, Knirke, to cancer. The band is dedicating this upcoming performance to her memory.
“When someone close to you dies, you realize every moment is a gift,” Bourke reflects. “Our time together is short, and we need to make the most of life while we’re able. Knirke was a shining light who brought joy and wonder to everyone around her. She wanted a giant dance party in her honor, and we aim to give her exactly that. This show will be a beautiful celebration.”
Beyond their time in the Tree Frogs, individual members have continued to write, record, and perform—together and in other projects—including Funk Shui, Cooper and the Jam, the John Henry Band, Old Flames, Kris Deelane and The Hurt, Hammerhead, Britnee Kellogg, Concrete Cowboys, and more.
