Department for Education (DfE) has committed £150 million to expand Skills Boot-camps for the
2022/23 (Wave 3). The Mayor secured an allocation of £18.9m from the Department for Education (DfE)
in March 2022, to deliver the Government’s Wave 3 Skills Boot-camps program in London in the
2022-23 financial year. Skills Boot-camps are intended to support regions and employers to fill skills
shortages by bringing participating individuals closer to good jobs through training that meets the
skills needs of local employers, and guaranteed job interviews.
The overarching objectives are to ensure participating employers commit to interviewing for their
identified skills shortage vacancies from the pool of trained individuals. Boot-camps will run for up to
16 weeks and will focus on higher level training (Level 3 – 5), apart from the green and construction
sectors which can include Level 2 training. They will include blended (online and in-person) and fully
online delivery. Skills Boot camps will be open to all adults aged 19 or over who are full-time or part-
time employed, self-employed or unemployed, as well as adults returning to work after a break.
The Mayor has awarded grants to organisations for the delivery of Skills Boot-camps in London. The
Skills Boot-camps for Londoner’s program aims to help Londoners aged 19+ to progress in work by
giving them access to in-demand skills training and a guaranteed interview for a more sustainable,
higher-skilled job and higher wages over time. The program will also benefit employers by helping
them to fill specific skills shortage vacancies, increasing productivity within their organisations.
The funding is available to support key sectors of the London economy, including green, digital,
construction, creative, hospitality, health and social care, technical (engineering and manufacturing),
and finance (professional services). The Skills Boot-camps for Londoner’s program aligns with the
commitments made in the Mayor’s Skills for Londoners strategy, Skills Road map for London and the
helping Londoners into Good Work recovery mission.
