WELCOME

The Purpose of the Holocaust Education Foundation of Central Virginia is to foster among the various constituencies of the public a heightened awareness and understanding of the nature of prejudice and intolerance, with special emphasis on the Holocaust. 

Primary activities include, but are not limited to, educational workshops, the development of educational materials, and the sponsorship of an annual competition within the middle and secondary schools. The topic for all projects is Keeping the Memory Alive.

The Foundation is dedicated to bringing nationally recognized speakers to Lynchburg. Our programs have informed and inspired high school and college students and the larger Lynchburg community. We have partnered with Randolph College, Lynchburg College, the Friends of the Lynchburg Public Library, and the LCS Education Foundation.  

We have brought a number of Holocaust survivors to speak. Gerda Weissman-Klein, author of All But My Life, subject of an academy award winning documentary, and winner of the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom, has visited four times. Eva Kor, one of the twins in Dr. Mengele’s experiments at Auschwitz and the subject of the documentary Forgiving Dr. Mengele, has visited twice. She is the author of Surviving the Angel of Death and Echoes from Auschwitz.

In broadening our outreach, we have included speakers representing current issues of genocide in Africa. John Dau, one of the lost boys of Sudan, subject of the documentary God Grew Tired of Us (winning top honors at Sundance), and author of the book by that title, spoke to students at Glass and to the public at Randolph College.  

We have supported Holocaust education by sending teachers to programs at the Virginia Holocaust Museum and sponsored workshops for area teachers.

Our foundation is a 501 (c) (3) organization and all contributions are fully tax-deductible. With your help we can continue with this important work promoting awareness, harmony and understanding with the young people of Central Virginia.
