The Aspen Misadventure (with Roger Blair) Competition Policy International, 2024

Abstract: We take a retrospective look at the Supreme Court’s decision in Aspen Skiing Co. v. Aspen Highlands Skiing Corp. We offer several criticisms of the Court’s ruling and the litigation errors that undermined an effective defense.

Demand for Over the Counter Contraceptives After Dobbs (with Garrison Pollard)

Abstract: This paper estimates the impact of abortion restrictions on the demand for over the counter contraceptives. We use retail scanner data from NielsenIQ which contains weekly store level purchase data on emergency contraception and condoms for thousands of retail locations across the United States. We merge this with Census data on county demographics for heterogeneity analysis. Exploiting the variation in state abortion laws following the Dobbs v. Jackson Supreme Court decision in June of 2022, we estimate the effect of abortion restrictions on purchases of condoms and emergency contraception separately in a difference-in-differences framework.
