Mucking out houses

Mucking

Even weeks after the flooding receded, some families still haven't had help cleaning mud and ruined belongings out of their houses. Spend the day with a group of 5-10 helping families reclaim their homes.

Where Will We Eat and Sleep?

Hemphill Community Center,
Letcher County, Kentucky

  • We will be tent camping next to the Hemphill Community Center near Neon, Kentucky. A portopotty is available on site. Showers are available in Neon.

  • The Center will provide meals.

How Should I Prepare?

  • Plan to attend an orientation meeting via zoom on the evening of either Sun, Aug 28, or Mon, Aug 29.

  • Make sure you have recent/current Tetanus and Hep A shots.

  • Read and sign a liability waiver and return to Dr. Satterwhite, satterwhite@vt.edu .

  • You'll likely want to have an extra change of clothes for the end of the day Saturday, especially if you choose to work on a mucking crew.

  • If you are planning to muck houses, bring your own personal protective equipment with you if possible (respirator, rubber boots, work gloves or rubber gloves). Other protective gear (hazmat suits, safety goggles) and tools (sturdy shovels) will be provided, but donations of these items are most welcome.
