At the beginning of the school year this year I will meet with our entire department and the NHS advisor. I am going to communicate with them about my peer tutoring plan. I will present the data gathered last year of the Algebra 2 failure rates and the survey results from my math colleagues, counselors and administration. Once I have meet with the department I will present my plan to the counselors and administration through my PCAP plan. I will communicate via a meeting to all of the stakeholders to try and promote a positive change to our math supplemental help beyond Geometry. There is not a class for extra help for Algebra 2 and beyond so this peer tutoring will be my proposal on how to help more students at CHS.
I am assuming the total responsibility of the peer tutoring program and will organize the hours and the logistics. But I am going to propose to the Algebra 2 teachers and Math lab teachers an opportunity to join the PCAP plan. This would provide me with some help to facilitate the process. Two of the three Algebra 2 teachers have a study hall so I am going to see if it could be possible to use their room for help during that time. I worked very hard this year to adjust my behavior towards these teachers to try and foster trust and credibility for this program. Throughout the summer I have tried to keep up communication with my department. We had a math teacher BBQ and I went and really enjoyed my time. I really worked on building trust and credibility for this program by talking to some of them about my plan. I was really excited to see that they were understanding how important this was to me and many were willing to think about doing the PCAP with me in August. Keep in mind it was in June so many teachers were ready to be done with school, but at least the door is open in August for me to get this plan in action. I overcame all the years of adversity working with them. I really worked on my delivery and am taking this leadership role very seriously by not allowing personal issues get in the way. I know I have a great rapport with my students and I am very good at my personal effectiveness with my students (see comments below) But I know in order for this tutoring program to work I need to be able to adapt to situations that will arise next year while implementing this program and understand that through resilience and humility we can all work together for what is best for our students.
I know I cannot do this alone if I want the program to be successful. I need to engage in self-reflection of the program and seek input from my fellow math teachers. I will be keeping a data journal monthly. I am going to collaborate with the Algebra 2 teachers each month to see if they have students that need help. I am also going to collect tutoring hour data for each student so I can show that this or is not working. I am really focusing on our lower income and less fortunate students but this will be for all students that want help. I am going to involve the special needs teachers so if their students need help they can use the program as well has parents. I want to create a learning environment for students that go beyond socioeconomic, class and or culture. I want to collect data and celebrate with the department the small victories. This will help the tutoring program survive.
This will be a constant job but something I was born to do. I love to show others how I teach in my classroom because I have the data to back up my teaching styles. Not all of my colleagues believe in those methods so what a better way to help other students that are not in my class but coach and mentor the tutors. I am going to focus on those seniors and juniors that are going into the education field and many of them have taking my math classes. They know how I use engaging activities to teach and I do not STAND and deliver. If these students can use these methods to help others in Algebra 2 what an awesome thing for them to learn as well as the Algebra 2 students. I also will continue to teach math teachers how to teach and go beyond my school walls. I am going to work with other districts and I have a few people that attended my MBI math workshop that want me to come present to their district. So I am working beyond my school to encourage an support teachers leader development.
