This website is for those high school social studies educators that wish to explore and integrate more holistic principles into their classroom. While there are many holistic education resources on the internet, few provide specific ideas and resources for incorporating it into the social studies curriculum, and even fewer focus on high school aged students. It is my hope this website and the resources linked will be helpful to high school social studies educators who are looking for specific guidance and ideas. While there were countless themes I could have chosen to frame this website around, I have chosen three ones I believe are crucial: indigenous ways of knowing, mindfulness and social emotional learning.
Holistic educators seek to highlight interconnections between subjects, people and the different dimensions of each of us (Loveless). Rather than focusing solely on the intellectual aspect of students, holistic educators sees the child as a whole being and approach education to nurture the care and growth of their body, mind, emotion and spirit (Karsten). As such, holistic educational approaches include opportunities for students to learn about themselves, healthy relationships, emotional development, resilience and the beauty of the world around them (Holistic Education: An Introduction). Through fostering these skills and forging connections to the community, natural world and spiritual values, holistic educators help learners find their purpose in life (Miller, 2000).
