The COMPASS Herpetology program is Montreat College’s week-long summer camp coordinated by Dr. Joshua Holbrook for rising high schoolers through college freshmen. This program aims to introduce students to the natural world of Reptiles and Amphibians, and provide insight on their ecology within the Appalachians and South Carolina Sandhills. Education is provided through various activities such as:
Lectures
Salamander night hikes within Montreat and its surrounding areas
Burmese Python dissections
Road-cruising to search for local herpetofauna
Camping at the Carolina Sandhills Wildlife Refuge
End-of-camp Herpetology trivia and creativity contest.
For those interested, Herpetology also offers a bonus week, where students can register for an additional 5-day experience prior to the main week of COMPASS.
