Founder and Coach
Coach Brian founded Heart Over Hype Basketball from two passions: a love for basketball and a desire to honor Jesus Christ through coaching.
Since beginning his coaching journey in 2014, Coach Brian has worked with players of all ages and skill levels. He started coaching in the park district with his own children before moving into middle school basketball, coaching in Hampshire, West Dundee, and Elgin. From 2018–2025, he helped oversee the middle school basketball program at Harvest Christian Academy, coaching both boys and girls teams and serving as a head coach for their 8th grade programs. He has also served as an assistant coach for Harvest Christian Academy high school teams and coached AAU basketball before founding Heart Over Hype Basketball in 2025.
Coach Brian believes basketball is much more than a game. It is a powerful platform to teach hard work, discipline, teamwork, perseverance, and leadership. Success in basketball requires individual commitment while also learning how to work together with teammates and coaches toward a common goal. These lessons prepare young athletes not only for competition, but for life.
Heart Over Hype was created with a mission to honor Jesus first. Coach Brian believes that the way we coach, compete, communicate, and treat others should reflect our faith. Through a culture built on encouragement, accountability, and high standards, his goal is to help players grow into confident athletes, selfless teammates, and people who positively impact those around them.
Guided by his faith and the truth of Ephesians 2:8-9, Coach Brian is passionate about using basketball as a way to serve others, build relationships, and point athletes toward the hope found in Jesus Christ.
Head of Basketball Operations and Coach
Coach Austin Brown brings more than 15 years of coaching experience to Heart Over Hype Basketball, having coached recreational leagues, AAU, middle school, and high school basketball. Throughout his coaching career, he has become known for his ability to develop players through intentional skill training and individualized instruction. His passion for teaching the game has helped both of his daughters earn opportunities to continue their basketball careers at the collegiate level.
While Austin is passionate about developing fundamentally sound basketball players, his greatest desire is to invest in the lives of the young people he coaches. His love for Jesus Christ is the foundation of his coaching philosophy and influences the way he leads, teaches, and serves every player and family in the program. He believes that excellence on the court begins with integrity, humility, and genuine care for others.
Austin has a unique ability to build meaningful relationships with his players, earning their trust while challenging them to reach their full potential. Whether teaching a new skill, encouraging a struggling athlete, or celebrating a player's growth, he is committed to helping each young woman become not only a better basketball player, but also a confident leader, a selfless teammate, and a person of strong character.
Coach Austin's heart for discipleship, player development, and authentic relationships makes him an integral part of the Heart Over Hype mission to develop athletes of excellence, character, and purpose through Christ-centered coaching.
