So, this class is going to delve into some behavioral science and how we can make that applicable to performance.
The two main sources for this class will come from the Alba Acting Technique (the linked page is in Spanish) and Paul Ekman's research on emotions.
This is a podcast from Berit Elizabeth and Matthew Ellenwood that gives a great explanation and application of what we'll be doing: Edge of the Stage
In summary, we will explore the function of the face in the larger world of emotional science. We will play around with some Facetudes and then start to look at what are some of the authentic facial attributes of various emotions. The ultimate goals are to 1. be more communicative with our body in performance. 2. be more accurate/authentic in our communication. 3. give your performances more detail and nuance by exploring emotional granularity.
The handout that you will need can be found here. I will bring some hard copies for class but you're welcome to get a head start by taking a look.
We will also need to learn a technique called "step out". I've provided a slide show. Try it out once or twice. We will go into detail in class.
Start thinking about what the following emotions look like:
Tenderness
Anger
Sensuality
Fear
Sadness
Joy
