A browser-based triple-axis spectrometer simulation and experiment-planning tool developed by Hodaka Kikuchi.
The simulator provides Q-E range calculations, TAS angle calculations, instrumental-resolution calculations, scan planning, and time estimation. Instrument parameters such as collimation, monochromator and analyzer properties, component dimensions, and flight-path lengths can also be configured.
No installation is required.
Takin is a software package for planning and analyzing triple-axis neutron-scattering experiments, including instrumental-resolution calculations.
For HODACA, each analyzer–detector channel can be approximated as an independent triple-axis spectrometer. A preliminary Takin configuration is provided below for estimating the resolution of a representative HODACA channel.
A preliminary HODACA configuration for a representative analyzer channel is available below.
HODACA D12 draft configuration
[HODACA_D12_draft.taz]
The current configuration is a draft single-channel approximation and has not yet been calibrated against experimental resolution data.
The source-to-monochromator distance is provisionally set to L0 = 53 m, following the value used in Hodaka Kikuchi's TAS resolution calculator. The monochromator-to-sample distance is set to L1 = 1.60 m. Analyzer-side distances are treated using the HODACA channel geometry rather than directly copying the L2 and L3 values from the TAS resolution calculator.
Several parameters, including the effective source geometry, guide divergence, monochromator and analyzer properties, and detector geometry, still require further verification.
The sample dimensions and mosaic should be changed to match the actual sample before performing resolution calculations.
In Takin:
Open Resolution > Parameters...
Select Load... in the resolution-parameter window.
Load the HODACA .taz file.
Confirm that Eckold-Sobolev is selected as the resolution algorithm.
Set the lattice parameters and scattering plane of your sample in the main Takin window.
Set the actual Q and energy-transfer point to be calculated.
For HODACA,
Fixed final energy: Ef = 3.635 meV
corresponding to approximately
kf = 1.3245 Å⁻¹
The Q and E values stored in the configuration file are only initial values for loading the file and should be replaced with the conditions of the measurement being considered.

The software provides functions including:
spectrometer-angle calculations using a UB matrix
resolution-function calculations
visualization of spectrometer motion during scans
checks of hardware and geometrical limits
lattice-constant fitting
scan-time estimation using an incident-flux file
Instrument settings can be adapted through configuration files.
