Volunteer

We have plenty of activities every year that need the assistance of approved TTSD volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering, you simply need to submit information (subject to a background check) and complete a brief training to become eligible. Once you are set up as a volunteer, you do not need to reapply again for three years, and you just need to re-take a 10-minute online training course once per year.

If you are already set up as a volunteer in the TTSD system, scroll down to read about our volunteer opportunities.

Volunteer Opportunities

Student Store (recurring): The store is on a rolling cupboard which is brought into the Commons area every Friday (“Fun Fridays”) during lunch. The cupboard contains bins of small items that the kids can purchase with their Hawk High Fives, which the kids earn through good behavior. After the lunchtime announcement that the store is open, the volunteer directs kids to form a line and sells items to the kids. It is limited to a single sale (item/unit) per kid to speed things along. If you have ever had the dream of being the most popular person at the prize counter at Big Al's, this is your chance to live that dream! And don't worry about chaos; the cupboard sits behind a "counter" of tables that keep the kids from crowding in.

Fun Friday Games (recurring): Kids who request one of the 20 Friday Games passes each week can get into the Maker Space area of the library for Fun Friday Games. There is one permanent volunteer for games, so any additional volunteer(s) would assist in helping kids pick out a game, pairing up kids who need someone to play with, and most importantly: figuring out the rules of some of the games! This is a very self-directed activity, and the kids generally come in with an immediate plan to dive into a game. The most popular game is Left Center Right, which the kids play for prizes (prizes are provided by the permanent volunteer) and the kids have played long enough that you can have veteran players teach the newbies how to play. Volunteer(s) may have to remind kids to keep the noise down, as the game play can get a little animated.

Maker Mondays (recurring): This is not a PSO function but Ms. Co in the library welcomes PSO helpers at her Maker Monday craft sessions. One Monday per month (usually the first Monday of the month) kids gather in the Maker Space in the HMS library to make a craft project that they can take home. All craft supplies are provided and there's already one permanent volunteer running it. All they need is an extra set of hands to help pass out items and help kids with their projects.

Special note: for our June Maker Monday on the 5th, we will be doing an escape room in the library!

Other Opportunities:

Book Fair (one time): Volunteers for the Book Fair will work with the PSO to set up and communicate information about the Barnes and Noble Book Fair fundraiser. Unlike the in-person book fairs of years past, Barnes and Noble offers an online purchase feature that allows families to purchase their books direct through Barnes and Noble and have a portion of those sales donated to the HMS PSO. No more intensive inventory setup, sales and tear-down; this is a much quicker and easier way for you to make a large impact with much less labor!

Eighth Grade Celebration (one time): Volunteers who work this event will work with the PSO to help organize the end of year party for the outgoing eighth grade class. There are a number of volunteer tasks for this event that we would love help with, from planning and fundraising before the celebration to help running the event that day. For those of you with an eighth grade student at HMS this year, this is your opportunity to customize a sendoff for them and their classmates that they will remember for years to come!

Family Partnership Day Potluck (one time): The PSO provides food to the teachers during the week of Family Partnership Day(s) and then we ask families for potluck donations to supplement the meal. This meal is generally served right after school, so this is an afternoon task. Volunteer(s) for this position assist in laying out the potluck donations in the teachers’ meal space and making sure families put their names on any serving dishes that they want returned. There is already a PSO person who will be bringing the main course items and will assist any volunteers. Additional volunteer position(s) available for clean up after the potluck, setting aside serving dishes for family pickups, cleaning serving spoons, etc.

Read & Win (one time): Volunteers for this springtime event will assist in soliciting donations for prizes, collecting packets and handing out prizes.
