Raised in the "Temple City of India"- Bhubaneswar, Hemakesh completed a 5-year Integrated M.Sc. in Industrial Chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) - Kharagpur. He then traveled to the US to gain in-depth knowledge and work with the finest researchers in the field of polymer science.
Hemakesh did his Ph. D. at the Pennsylvania State University. Supervised by Professor Scott Phillips, he worked on the chemistry of stimuli-responsive polymers used for sensing applications. After completing his Ph. D., he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, Irvine and the University of Chicago. As a post-doc, he developed a new method to carry out controlled radical polymerization initiated by high-frequency sound.
Hemakesh's research interest include stimuli-responsive polymers, self-strengthening polymers, and polymer mechanochemistry.
