Family Therapy is a unique type of group therapy. It typically consists of a family with multiple family members participating in the therapeutic process. The goal of family therapy is to enhance the growth of each family member and of the whole family.
Conflict between family members is often caused by dysfunctional patterns in communication that has developed between family members. When these dysfunctional communication patterns are present and it affects the whole family, the family as a whole may wish to attend therapy together.
Whether it is a single family member causing distress or conflict among the whole family, or whether there is incongruencies in parenting styles, family boundary issues or mental health conditions among family members, the psychologist will assist in healing the family unit. The psychologist may assist the family by working with all the family members involved to develop healthy coping mechanisms, encourage effective communication and develop healthier family dynamics.
