Application is open for 2026-27!
California has a two-tiered credentialing system for teachers. Preliminary programs prepare candidates to obtain an initial teaching credential through successful completion of required coursework, fieldwork, and a performance demonstration of their knowledge, skills, and abilities. The second tier of preparation is a two-year job-embedded individualized induction program that is focused on extensive support and mentoring to new teachers in their first and second year of teaching.
Teacher Induction programs are different across the state. Be sure to do the research to understand the programs you are interested in participating.
Induction is a two-year program for most. In some cases, candidates qualify for our early completion option (ECO). If you completed one year of induction through a different program, you will have received credit for year one with a certificate of completion, also called a transportability document, from your program. You would then complete year two through HIU.
At the time of application a non-refundable $100 deposit is due. This will be applied towards the tuition fee.
The tuition fee is $3,500 per year. Tuition of $1,750 is due at the start of each semester. If you would like more information about the monthly payment plan, please contact the program coordinator or dean via the consultation page. HIU does not provide assistance with tuition. There are academic loans available through the School's First Federal Credit Union. Please contact them at 714-258-4000.
The deposit is non-refundable and is applied to your tuition.
The tuition refund schedule is as follows:
Within one week after the start date of the program - 90% credit
Within two weeks after the start date of the program - 75% credit
After the third week after the start date of the program - No credit
The completion of your first year in any CTC accredited program, including the HIU Induction program, is portable. If you leave your school or district and need to move to another induction program for year two, you may take your transferability document to your new school or district to earn credit for completion of year one.
If you do not complete a program year, there is no credit issued for year. If while enrolled in HIU's Induction program, there are extenuating circumstances such as a medical need, please contact the program coordinator or professor to discuss options for delaying completion of the program year.
If you have completed at least two (2) years of full-time exemplary teaching experience while holding a valid preliminary credential or three (3) years full-time while completing an intern program and currently hold a valid preliminary credential, you may qualify for the Early Completer Option (ECO). This option would allow you to complete the program in one program year instead of two. There are defined criteria and documentation you must submit to apply for this option. Please see here for details. The orientation meeting will also provide more information. Contact the program coordinator or dean for more information.
The HIU Induction program is primarily virtual for the HIU cohort. You may have the option to meet either in-person or virtually with your mentor for weekly meetings and observation purposes. The end-of-year Colloquium is held virtually.
For the partner district(s), meetings formats are determined by the district Induction team.
Yes, you need to be a “teacher of record” in the broadest definition to participate in the HIU Teacher Induction program. This includes Long Term Subs, Instructional Assistants, and Home School teaching situations. Please email the coordinator for advising.
The HIU Teacher Induction program defines “teacher of record” as the person that is responsible for, and has the autonomy to plan lessons, provide instruction, facilitate learning, and assess learning for a consistent group of students throughout the school year (August/September-May). This includes a teacher's aide or instructional assistant who meets the requirements listed in the previous sentence. The minimum requirement per the CTC is 4 hours a day for 75% of the school year.
You can enroll in the HIU Teacher Induction program as a part-time teacher. However, you must meet the “teacher of record” definition. Please contact the program coordinator or dean to discuss your situation and if you qualify for the Induction program. Instructional aides often qualify for Induction!
Yes. The HIU Teacher Induction program is proud to support many private and charter school teachers.
Most long-term substitute contracts could meet the definition of “teacher of record”. If you are guaranteed to be able to work with the same group of students for an entire program year (August-May) you may be able to participate (with Administrator verification). Please contact the program coordinator for advisement.
Candidates are able to complete year 1 and year 2 at different programs. After your first year of completion, you will receive a certificate of completion or a certificate of transportability. Present that to the HIU program coordinator so that you can enroll in year 2 at HIU.
Once year 2 has been completed and you have met any additional stipulations/requirements on your preliminary credential, HIU will recommend you for your clear credential.
Depending on your employer, you will either be paired with a mentor from within your school/district, or you will be paired with a mentor from our stellar HIU mentoring pool. Whenever possible, you will be paired with a mentor who is (or has been) job-alike/credential-alike. That means if you are a K-6 teacher, we will make every effort to pair you with a mentor who has K-6 teaching experience. On rare occasions, if it is not possible to pair you with a job-alike/credential-alike mentor, you will be paired with a mentor who is as closely aligned with your teaching assignment as possible and additional support will be provided for content related needs.
New mentors can visit our website to apply as a mentor. Prospective mentors are interviewed, and if deemed a qualified, acceptable match, they may be hired to support you. Mentors are matched based on the credential held, context of teaching experience, and assignment.
Yes, we pay our mentors an $1,800.00 stipend annually for each Candidate they support.
No. You do not need to live in close proximity to participate in our program, but you are required to be teaching in California.
We offer rolling enrollment beginning in March for the following school year. The fall semester begins in mid-August. Enrollment closes in the middle of September. While we generally do not accept new candidates for the spring semester, please contact the dean to discuss your unique situation.
HIU welcomes and serves candidates from all backgrounds. In order to recruit from a diverse pool, our flyers will be posted on our social media sites, LinkedIn, and sent via email to local charters, districts, and private schools in the greater Orange County, Los Angeles, and San Bernardino areas. We will specifically target areas that do not have their own Induction program and represent a diverse population.
Support for candidates is an essential part of the Induction program. The program communicates with candidates via email and announcements through our Canvas LMS. The Program Chair is available for in-person or virtual office hours and meetings, phone conversations, email and site visits to support the candidate in meeting the credential requirements. The Program Chair leads the meetings during the program year. In the first few months of the program, the mentors conduct a Triad Meeting with the candidate and their school site administrator to discuss program expectations and begin the Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) process.
If available and requested by the candidate, we will also work to match the candidate with a mentor of a similar cultural background. While this is not always requested or wanted, it is something that is offered. These structures of support will be consistently applied in order to encourage and retain candidates who represent diverse populations. Ultimately, our goal is for new teachers to persist and thrive in the profession.
Our program will require you to meet with your assigned mentor for an average of one hour per week. You will drive your inquiry project (this is your ILP) based on data from your class of students.
Within your ILP, you will set professional goals as aligned to the CSTPs, observe colleagues and be observed, and you will attend professional learning of your choosing to reach your goals. You will be responsible for keeping your Individual Learning Plan (ILP) updated, with the support of your trained mentor. As part of your ILP, you will conduct an inquiry-based action research project during your second semester of each year and provide documentation of your data analysis and reflection of your teaching practice. Finally, you will attend meetings, for support and collaboration with your colleagues in the program, and participate in the Colloquium celebration at the end of each year. At the end of the program, you will complete an exit presentation to a panel. This is your opportunity to share what you learned through your ILP.
That depends. In some cases, your employer will pay for Induction. In other cases, you will be responsible for paying the Induction program tuition. Please check with your employer before applying for the program.
If you still have a question or special circumstance to discuss, please contact our program coordinator and dean, via email Dr. Joyce Yang jyang@hiu.edu. She is happy to set up a Zoom meeting or phone call.
