History of Wisconsin Dells
Wisconsin Dells seems like a new, fun, and exciting vacation area to people who are not from Wisconsin; however, what most people don’t know, is that the Wisconsin Dells has been around for over 150 years! The Wisconsin Dells became popular after they first launched steamboat tours in 1871 which caused the name to change from Kilbourn City to Wisconsin Dells in 1931.
The Ho-Chunk Nation roots run deep to the Wisconsin Dells area as they settled there in the 1830's but were forced out of the area and weren't able to re-settle there until 1873. Traditionally, the Ho-Chunk Nation hunted, fished, and farmed alongside the Wisconsin River. Wisconsin Dells created a Ho-Chunk Nation Museum, celebrating their culture of music, art, and storytelling as well as their history.
