I interviewed Dr. Faika Al-Mutawa, my grandmother, she was the third female doctor in Kuwait and she had lived through the era of radio in Kuwait. Why did I choose to interview her? I saw how much she loves the radio and how she is attached to the radio even with the development of media.
My first question for her was when you started using the radio?
She said: that back in the day, they had a radio in their house for her dad, whenever he opened it, they gathered around to listen to him. But after she grew up and started knowing how to open the radio, she used to listen to songs and dance. She said: “When I was your age, I loved listening to Abdul Haleem, Fareed Alatrash, and Om Kalthom”.
In the past, they didn’t have something to entertain just the radio, because television wasn’t popular at that time. She said: “We listened to the series on the radio, and it was very fun, especially the Kuwaiti old series like Maryam AL Ghadban and Maryam AL Saleh. Every day we listen to the episode and wait until the next day to continue the story”. Also, she mentioned that on Cairo radio station there were a lot of series, and they got to listen to them because there was no other choice, but they enjoyed it. Her father used to listen to BBC London news because at that time the whole world mainly was getting news and everything from them.
Recently, I bought this vintage radio from Germany. (photo taken by me)
Moreover, I asked her why you prefer the radio on other media devices. She answered: “I like the radio because it gives me the news brief, whereas the television sometimes doesn’t, and the phone. I set every time in the afternoon at one o’clock to check all Kuwait news. These days the radio has become more entertaining. For example, interviewing doctors and influencers, without the need to see them just to hear”. Also, she mentioned that she prefers listening to the news on the radio because the TV hurts her eyes with time.

Finally, I asked her about the years when she studied abroad, did you use the radio more often there?
She said: “When I went to study in Cairo in 1964, I didn’t have time to listen to the radio every day because I was busy studying medicine, but I and my friends at the student housing in Cairo gathered around to watch television together, it was fun”.
