The Histo:RY International Media Competition is run by a youth initiative bringing educational debate opportunities to refugee youth groups.
Submitting to this competition is an opportunity to share your thoughts to an international network of refugee youth around the world, to have your entry reviewed by a panel of established academics and representatives of the community, and to try for an exciting prize!
This is more than a contest...
...it is a chance to put your thoughts into art, and to have that art carry its voice across to a community. Whether that be essay writing, voice recording, poetry, or photography, we want you to tell the story that you want to tell, in the form that you want to tell it in.
Why submit your work?
Currently, no essay competitions exist for refugee youth that are open to submissions from all countries. Because Histo:RY is an initiative that works with refugee youth groups, it has taken steps to ensure that this competition is accessible for students in difficult locational circumstances. Furthermore, unlike most international competitions, we do not ask for sensitive personal details such as formal documentation or contacts, and all prizes have been made as accessible as possible. We remain flexible to contact in case of special circumstances and offer a variety of submission formats to ensure that we are offering the easiest experience possible.
1. Prizes!
We offer exclusive prizes for winners, including creative mentorship, feedback from distinguished judges, publication opportunities, and of course, certificates*!
*Differs depending on the year cycle. We cannot guarantee cash prizes due to legal and financial complications with international transfer.
2. Alternative Submission Methods
Alternative submission methods unique to this contest include: voice recording, visual art submissions, submission by WhatsApp, and the option to have the entry translated into English prior to judging.
3. Pair Support Mechanism
Contestants who are eligible and wanting to submit to this contest but face barriers including, but not restricted to, difficulty writing in English, difficulty with technology, or translation requirements, may request pair support from a member of Histo:RY, who may be able to act as a scribe or assist with technological requirements.

Note: Although we are able to provide a wide range of alternative submission methods, we would still like to maintain the integrity and honesty of this competition. All submissions will be checked for generative AI (AI used to generate ideas or entire phrases; AI used for translation will be considered on a case-by-case basis by our judging panel), and we ask that contestants submit their own work, rather than having somebody else submit their work, or having someone create a submission for them.
