ASL in Miniature

I have been using 20mm or 1/72 miniatures to re-fight the battles of World War II using the Advanced Squad Leader rules on and off since 1998.

I have various theaters/nationalities represented

  • Germans- Winter mid-war, winter late-war, summer Werhmacht, SS
  • Russian- Winter, summer, Stalingrad
  • Americans- Winter, summer, USMC
  • British- Summer/Normandy
  • Japanese

Terrain types

  • Spring/Summer/Fall
  • Winter
  • Pacific

Small Mortain setup at HMGS Fall In! some years ago. This featured the "Old Hickory" 30th Infantry Division holding out against counterattacking Germans.

Note famed George Guerriero of Minuteman Toy Soldiers blurry in the background! He has great lines of 20mm WWII miniatures and can help source many more.

US Marines assault a Japanese held island. This is part of a large Gavutu/Tanombogo layout I have based on the HASL module "Sand & Blood" that has now been reissued in the Rising Sun Module from MMP. I highly recommend it!

Germans supported by Stugs and Sdkfz 251/1s cross a frozen river deep in Russian and prepare to assault and enemy held ridge line.

I use the GHQ Terrain Maker foam hexes for the base terrain. I have also supplement this by cutting larger pieces from foam insulation, then scoring in the 4" hex pattern with a hot knife.

Aesthetically the hex pattern is different than felt, mats, or terrain boards but gives an interesting look and works GREAT for using boardgame rules. No more rulers!

Some shots from a game long ago (crazy how time flies) at the Danville, VA Tank Museum. It represented a generic Ardennes engagement with Americans attacking a German Kampfgruppe.
