INTRODUCTION


Government P.G. College, Ranikhet started its functioning in the year 1973 with a small room in Ranikhet and subsequently was shifted to its current location in Chiliyanaula in the year 1982. The College has a repute of providing good quality education in various subjects to the people of the region, which has been surrounded mainly by the rural areas. Looking at the importance of History education in the world as a global village, the Department of History came into existence in the year 1979 and started to function in the same academic session. It was started with a three year Bachelors level program i.e. B.A. TDC, which was taught in a bilingual mode ever since the commencement of learning in the year 1987. There was only a Three post for teaching staff sanctioned in the department. The classes at the Master's level were started with the academic session 1979.


The goal of History department has been towards expanding the horizons of learning with the integration of global knowledge which creates an individual who is knowledgeable, competent, and Critical. A History graduate should possesses traits of reflective and individual thinking through which he/she should be able to apply the underlying assumptions and theories in problem identification and solving the problems so identified with strategic decision-making. The program focuses on succeeding in this globally competitive world and making the learners acquaint them with the best in the world so that they develop intellectual autonomy, personal learning and become lifelong learners. At present the classes are being conducted at two levels:


A.  B.A. three year course that is segregated into 6 semesters of theoretical learning, A student is provided to get a specialisation in the subject of their choice in the last semester from amongst the subjects available to them in the syllabus.


B.  M.A. is a two year course that is further segregated into 4 semesters, the students are motivated to apply their theoretical knowledge with a blend of practical approaches, as the students have to submit a Assignments to the department on the basis of the work carried on by them in functional areas of History which is evaluated by the internal examiner of History department.
