The 1929 Willys Whippet Roadster A Family Treasure

This month, I would like to share a piece of my family history. 

A Bit of Background

After serving in the Royal Australian Air Force during World War II, my Dad returned to a country still rebuilding itself. Post-war shortages made cars a rarity, while key items including petrol remained rationed until 1950. Australia was a very different place back then compared to today.  

Faced with limited options, my Dad focused on finding a vehicle that was both economical to run and comfortable. He purchased a 1929 Whippet Roadster for our family and often took us on weekend drives through the countryside. As a small child, I have fond memories of riding in the dicky seat—a small fold-out seat located at the rear of the car. A practice that would undoubtedly raise eyebrows today!

A Brief History

The Willys Whippet, produced by the Willys-Overland Company in Toledo, Ohio, was a popular automobile in the late 1920s. The Whippet was known for its affordability, reliability, and innovative features, making it a favourite among families and car enthusiasts alike. The 1929 model, in particular, was a standout with its sleek design and impressive specifications. (1)

The Whippet was the third best-selling car in the United States behind Ford and Chevrolet, and it had a significant presence in Australia as well.

The exact number of Willys Whippet models imported into Australia isn't readily available, but it's known that these vehicles were quite popular during their time.

The 1929 Willys Whippet models imported into Australia underwent several modifications to better suit local conditions and preferences.  However, it's known that all Whippet models were manufactured and distributed in Australia by Holden body shops, with some minor modifications to suit local conditions. These modifications helped the Willys Whippet models perform reliably and efficiently in the unique Australian environment..(2)

Some of the key modifications:

Improved Cooling System: With the upgraded cooling system, the risk of overheating was greatly reduced, especially in the hotter Australian climate. This meant the engine could operate more efficiently and consistently, leading to better overall performance and reliability.

Reinforced Suspension: The stronger suspension system allowed the Whippet models to handle rough and unpaved roads more effectively. This not only improved the ride comfort but also reduced the wear and tear on the vehicle, enhancing its durability and lifespan.

Adapted Fuel System: The modifications to the fuel system allowed the Whippet models to run smoothly on the lower-quality fuel available in Australia at the time. This ensured that the engine maintained its performance and reduced the likelihood of fuel-related issues.

Sturdier Body and Chassis: The reinforced body and chassis made the vehicles more robust and capable of withstanding the harsh driving conditions. This increased their reliability and reduced the need for frequent repairs.

The Legacy of the Whippet

The 1929 Willys Whippet Roadster remains a testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of its time. Although few of these vehicles survive today, they continue to be celebrated by vintage car enthusiasts and collectors.

For me, the Whippet is a reminder of my Dad's love and devotion, of holidays, weekend road trips, sunny picnics by the beach and visits to the countryside.  The Whippet Roadster holds a special place in my heart.
