BCE stands for "Before Common Era." It is a secular term used to denote years before the start of the Common Era, which corresponds to the year 1 CE (Common Era). BCE is equivalent to the term "BC" (Before Christ) used in the Gregorian calendar. The use of BCE and CE (Common Era) is intended to provide a non-religious alternative to BC and AD (Anno Domini, meaning "In the year of our Lord").
For example:
The year 500 BCE means 500 years before the start of the Common Era (or 500 BC).
The year 500 CE is the same as 500 AD.
