Background:
As one of the first land-grant institutions, Iowa State University (ISU) was founded and continues to promote a “practical education,” utilizing science with practice to solve real-world problems. The emphasis on practicality and responsibility to our state stakeholders makes ISU a critical liaison between scientific discover and the communities that can benefit from those discoveries. From the early years (1870s) to the present, ISU has fulfilled this role with its off-campus extension program that enhances the quality of lives of Iowans across the state. In line with this role and mission, we are launching a Science Café project in collaboration with Dallas County Extension office as one method to make a real-world impact and improve the relationship between our communities and researchers.
A Science Café is a casual presentation from scientist to community members at an easily accessible place, such as coffee shops, pubs, libraries, etc. Science Cafés are hosted worldwide and have been found to enhance scientific literacy, such as identifying trustworthy sources of information and increase ability to speak with scientist. We are utilizing existing networks in extension and outreach to connect with local communities (Adel and Perry as our first sites) to host Science Cafés where various ISU researchers discuss research projects with local community members.
Our approach:
This fall, we are launching our first pilot of the Science Cafe for 9 months. We have our 3 topics and presentations for the fall, but feedback from attendees at the fall series will inform research topics discussed in the spring. After the first year, we will be looking at our success and areas of improvement to continue the project and possible expand.
At our last session in the spring (forecasted to be May), we will host a focus group of attendees to get even more feedback. From there, we will combine all data we collected and build a "Science Cafe Toolkit".
Come check it out!
