The Hirosaki Neputa Festival is a summer festival based around warding off sleep demons. These demons were believed to cause people to be too tired to work farms during the most important time to plant crops. The modern Neputa Festival is believed to have originated from a traditional event called the Nemuri Nagashi. There are many Neputa Festivals around the tohoku one but this one is held in Hirosaki which is an old castle town.
This festival is known for it's 80 or so floats which are called Neputas. These large floats are made by a number of local groups in different neighborhoods. These floats are all made in large fan shapes and have big murals painted on the sides of them. Another major aspect of these festivals are the very large drums they move around for the parade, these drums are called Odaiko.

Direct Voice by Chayce Setter:
This festival is very interesting in that it's main imagery is directly ingrained in the different aspects of the parade. The lanterns help to illuminate the night and showcase large images of warriors and significant mythological figures. Alongside this the large drums create sounds that would resonate fully through the crowd and those who are participating. The fact that the festival is based around warding off sleep demons makes light and sound are very important as they are directly connected to the process of warding off sleep, but within the festival they are so beautifully decorated. The community cooperation when it comes to building the floats and working together to organize the festival works as one of it's strongest aspects.
