Born: September 13, 1813 in Cornwall, CT (49 Years Old)
Military Family background (grandfather was a lieutenant colonel in the Revolutionary War)
Graduated 24th of 50 cadets from West Point Military Academy in 1837
Given a rank of second lieutenant in the U.S. Artillery Branch, fighting in both the Seminole Wars, as well as the Mexican-American War, receiving two promotions during the war.
In 1857, accepted the promotion to rank of major in the United States Calvary
At the onset of the Civil War, received the promotion to brigadier general in August, 1861.
Division commander in Spring 1862
Wounded three times at the Battle of Antietam, healed fully for the start of 1863
Given command of the VI Corps - the largest Corps in the Army of the Potomac, in December, 1862
In June 1863, became in charge of the "right wing" of the Army of the Potomac, which includes the II, V, VI, and XII Corps, as well as both Kilpatrick as well as Gregg's Calvary Division
Very well liked by his soldiers, given the nickname "Uncle" by many of them
Is not well regarded for being punctual in battle, at times delayed
