Assisted in the fight in the Seminole Wars
1857 - began to work for the Lakes Survey of the Great Lakes, specifically Lake Huron and Lake Michigan
At the onset of the Civil War, Meade was promoted to brigadier general under John F. Reynolds division
Is given divisional command when Reynolds is promoted to I Corps Commander
After Fredericksburg, is given command of the V Corps
Like many Corps commanders, is skeptical of Hooker's competency
His soldiers see him as being short-tempered, which some now call him a "snapping turtle"
Is an expert in use of topography in battle due to previous engineering experience
Has been silent on political matters in Washington and their influence on the Army of the Potomac
