Born: July 23, 1822 in Putnam County, NY (40 Years Old)
Graduated 13th out of 59 cadets.
Served in the Mexican-American War - earned the title of first lieutenant for "gallant and meritorious" conduct.
After the Mexican-American War, Couch served in the Seminole Wars in Florida 1849-1850.
Took a one year leave of absence in 1853 to go on a scientific mission for the Smithsonian Institution in northern Mexico. It is there he discovered two species, Couch's kingbird, and Couch's spadefoot toad.
1854, rejoined the military on various garrison duties.
August, 1861, Couch was promoted to brigadier general, which then led to division command in Spring 1862.
Just prior to Fredericksburg, Couch became commander of the II Corps, the II Corps was responsible for attacking the right flank of Longstreet's Corps on Marye's Heights. Although the assault was a disaster, Couch led the attack as he was instructed.
Constantly quarreling with new commander, Joseph Hooker, which only intensified after Chancellorsville.
Unless there's a change, Couch is ready to leave the Army of the Potomac.
President Lincoln is impressed with Couch's service, and doesn't want to lose him.
