I realized that YL recently chose the most talented people to pick songs for clubs. These people were at YL camps last summer leading music. They spent time sorting through the options. They are younger and hipper than me. They might not have done it perfectly, but I may as well put their hard work to good use. Their song selections were likely sitting on the hard drive of every club room computer at every YL camp. I knew what to do next.

There's nothing worse then when you're trying to host a party and the tunes are sub-par. When you've got your outfits on and the drinks flowin', what you need is a proper, curated party playlist that covers all the bases. Well, look no further. Party songs come in all shapes and sizes, but there are some rules: they have to be bangers, and they have to make you want to dance.

A collaboration between Scottish electro house kingpin Calvin Harris and pop superstar Rihanna, "We Found Love" is a perfect storm of massive club sounds and soaring pop hooks. An irrepressible blend of euphoria and despair, the tune sat atop the Billboard Hot 100 for ten non-consecutive weeks, establishing it as RiRi's longest running number-one single.

Dance Club Songs was a chart published weekly between 1976 and 2020 by Billboard magazine. It used club disc jockeys set lists to determine the most popular songs being played in nightclubs across the United States.[1]

The chart would continue to be published continuously for over 40 years, but with changes. The chart soon expanded to 40 positions, then in 1979 the chart expanded to 60 positions, then 80, and eventually reached 100 positions from September 1979 until 1981, when it was reduced back to 80.[3] During the first half of the 1980s, the chart maintained 80 slots until March 16, 1985, when the Disco charts were splintered and renamed. Two charts appeared: Hot Dance/Disco Club Play, which ranked club play (at 50 positions), and Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales, which ranked 12-inch single (or maxi-single) sales (also 50 positions, later reduced to 10 and discontinued in 2013, since replaced by Dance/Electronic Digital Songs).

On January 26, 2013, Billboard introduced the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, which tracks the 50 most popular dances and electronic songs as determined by Billboard based on digital single sales, streaming, radio airplay across all formats, and club play, with Dance Club Songs serving as the club play component to the multi-metric chart.[4]

On March 31, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused the closures of clubs, Billboard suspended the chart.[5] The last number-one song, for the issue dated March 28, 2020, was "Love Hangover 2020" by Diana Ross.[6] Even after the pandemic receded and club attendance increased again, Billboard has not revived the chart nor published any information about a possible revival, effectively ending the nearly 44-year run of the chart.

Although the disco chart began reporting popular songs in New York City nightclubs, Billboard soon expanded coverage to feature multiple charts each week which highlighted playlists in various cities such as San Francisco, San Diego, Boston, Los Angeles, Miami, Phoenix, Detroit, and Houston. During this time, Billboard rival publication Record World was the first to compile a dance chart which incorporated club play on a national level. Noted Billboard statistician Joel Whitburn has since "adopted" Record Worlds chart data from the weeks between March 29, 1975, and August 21, 1976, into Billboards club play history. For the sake of continuity, Record Worlds national chart is incorporated into both Whitburn's Dance/Disco publication (via his Record Research company) as well as the 1975 and 1976 number-ones lists.[3]

In January 2017, Billboard proclaimed Madonna as the most successful artist in the history of the chart, ranking her first in their list of the 100 top all-time dance artists.[7] Madonna holds the record for the most number-one songs with 50.[8] Katy Perry holds the record for having eighteen consecutive number-one songs.[8] Perry's third studio album, Teenage Dream (2010), became the first album in the history of the chart to produce at least seven number-one songs by a lead artist[note 1] It held this record until Rihanna's eighth studio album Anti produced eight chart toppers from 2016 to 2017.[9][10] Rihanna is the only artist to have achieved five number-one songs in a calendar year.[10]

One of my new favourite songs! We pointed out all of our body parts as we listened. Such a great beat.

Your new record was just released in June. And a lot of the songs, I heard, were written in 2020. I'm curious to know how the pandemic has played a role and affected the functionality of the band.

Matthew: I agree with all of that. From my perspective, it's probably the most honest record we've made. I feel like part of it's how we made it. And I think part of it is our age. We're all different ages in the band, but Mike and I are in the later half of our 30s here and it's like you're less self-conscious. You're less worried about what the world is going to think about a song, and there's less of a mask or a front. I think we just kind of made songs we'd liked and didn't necessarily overthink, or turn into something else. There's almost kind of a midlife crisis vibe to some of the songs. We're just kind of honest, where we've been a band for a long time, and there's some different perspectives seeping into it. There's no one right meaning for each song, but there are more confessional moments on the record. "Goodnight Paradise" kind of laid the groundwork for some of that stuff, too. But I think our earlier work is more like ... There wasn't really as much of a personal element to most of the lyrics. It was more of just like, "What words do I like to put together? What kind of environment am I trying to create?" So it's maybe more like a human touch to some other words.

Michael: I think it honestly might have both our heaviest moments and some of our quietest moments on the same record. Maybe not quite as, but yeah, I think that's pretty cool. I'm excited to play it live too. Because we've just rehearsed last night. We have a local women's choir that is going to be singing a few songs at our release show at the Fine Line on the 30th. So it's just been fun to think of new ways to be creative and mix it up.

The 9:30 Club changed my life. I was there in the beginning as a musician in the first band to play that club, Tiny Desk Unit. I wrote an essay to commemorate that club and to highlight the importance of nightclubs across the country as we all ponder their future. While we have some time before we can be back in the venues we all love, dig through this archive and spread the word.

The granddaddy of all local music venues, The Continental Club has enjoyed a coast-to-coast reputation as the premiere club for live music in Austin, Texas since 1955 and in Houston since 2000.

Ahead of a fundraiser this Saturday, April 20, Tranzac Executive Director Jason Doell discusses the challenges piling up against small and independent venues across the country, and how he's taking steps to secure the club's future.

Alongside the often-cited problems of rising interest rates and inflation, for the Tranzac, insurance is a major issue. Premiums have been ballooning since the pandemic, and insurers are more wary of music venues, given that lockdown revealed how unstable the in-person business model can be. Doell says that a recent renewal of the club's insurance posed major difficulties. "They don't want to deal with venues in general," he explains. "The pandemic showed us how tenuous things can be."

Despite these challenges, Doell says the Tranzac isn't closing its doors anytime soon. The club has a strong community of dedicated supporters, who have been donating to the GoFundMe and buying tickets for the fundraiser, which features performances from acclaimed experimental artists Sandro Perri, Masahiro Takahashi and Anne Bourne.

"The bulk of folks who come through [the venue]," he explains, "are kind of Tranzac die-hards." In a given year, the venue will host 1500+ performances across its three rooms, as well as 60+ residency artists. The club is also home to more than just music events, hosting poetry readings, theatrical performances, zine libraries and more.

ALABAMA & Friends commemorates that summer at The Bowery and catalogues the lasting influence the group has had on generations of Country stars who draw inspiration from the sparkling harmonies, irresistible stage presence and world-class songwriting and song selection that made them superstars. It brings together some of Country's biggest stars, each bringing a unique musical approach to classic ALABAMA songs that have influenced them.

The songs here are, of course, among the most memorable in country history. Included are "My Home's In Alabama," the band's first major hit and the song that introduced them to the world; "Tennessee River," their very first #1; "Old Flame" and "Love in the First Degree," from their second RCA album; "Lady Down On Love," a harmony-laden example of Randy's songwriting prowess; "The Closer You Get," released halfway through their streak of 21 chart-toppers; "She And I," from the mid-'80s; and "Forever's As Far As I'll Go" and "I'm In A Hurry (And Don't Know Why)," which helped kick off the '90s, in which the boys earned 29 more chart hits, including 22 #1 or Top 5 singles. 0852c4b9a8
