Despite a Dutch victory in Cannes in 1959, London was the host city of the fifth Eurovision Song Contest. The United Kingdom hosted in 1960 after the Dutch broadcaster declined the opportunity to host the contest again after staging it in 1958.

Jean-Claude Pascal from Luxembourg took the trophy with his song Nous Les Amoureux. He scored 31 points, leaving the United Kingdom behind in second place again after the country already finished second in 1960 and 1959.

Even though France had won the year before, the contest travelled to London again in 1963. France didn't want to host the Eurovision Song Contest so soon after hosting it in 1959 and 1961. The 1963 contest was held in the BBC's brand new Television Centre and in an attempt to give the contest a more modern look and feel, two television studios were used. All songs were performed in one studio, but the audience was located in another. Each song had its own unique staging, and the change of set was done very quickly. As a result of this, rumours began that the performances were pre-recorded which later turned out to be untrue.

France Gall from Luxembourg won the contest with the highly controversial Poupe De Cire, Poupe De Son. It was controversial because of the suggestive lyrics of the song. It was also the first pop song to ever win the Eurovision Song Contest. The song became a massive hit in almost all European countries and had a major impact on the type of songs entered into the contest in the following years.

The eleventh edition of the Eurovision Song Contest was hosted in Luxembourg again. A rule was introduced stipulating that songs had to be performed in one of the official languages of the participating country after Sweden's entry was performed in English the year before.

Dr. Steve Williams, associate professor of sociology, gives us an abridged history of rock 'n' roll and its association with social climates and social movements. The following, in his own words, covers the decades of the 1950s - 1960s. In part II we'll talk about the 1970s - 1990s.

Rock 'n' roll sort of calmed down at the end of the 50s. A lot of things happened sort of simultaneously. There was a terrible plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens. Elvis Presley went into the military for a while and wasn't making music. When he did come back, he was a little bit out of step and wasn't quite the same. Jerry Lee Lewis got in trouble for marrying his 13-year old cousin and was ostracized. His record company and radio stations weren't supporting his music any more. In 1959 or 1960, it seemed like rock 'n' roll almost disappeared. Mothers and fathers could breathe a sigh of relief as their kids listened to Brenda Lee and Neil Sedaka - "safe" white teen idols with glowing white teeth.

By the mid-60s, things started percolating, young people started to listen to folk music a bit more, people like Woody Guthrie and Joan Baez and later, Bob Dylan. Folk brought in greater lyrical content to rock 'n' roll. So now, instead of a basic two-minute love song, you could have songs about just about anything.

You had the British invasion in 1964. Young British kids were listening to American rock 'n' roll and R&B and are forming their own bands. In the 60s, you had all these amazing new British bands: The Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Who, etc. Now there's the idea of the self-contained band. Instead of having songs written for them, and using studio musicians, now they were writing their own lyrics and music. They played all their own instruments and toured as a group, which meant they controlled what they're expressing. Combine that with folk music expanding lyrical content and suddenly you have a whole new set of fears. Things were being expressed in ways they weren't before. Now, not only was there suggested sexuality of rock 'n' roll, there's an actual free love movement.

Music was about to change. While many bands from the 1950s returned to the charts in the 60s, rock and roll music was starting to top the charts. R&B and country songs also found their way onto the charts.

Songwriters have always been fascinated with clouds for their variability and the many different shapes they can take on. Clouds can also affect your mood, so they can embody and represent a litany of different emotions. This list of best songs about clouds demonstrates the range of meanings of clouds.

Twenty-five of their songs were publicly known at the time from recordings or songbooks, but our research has revealed that the team wrote more than fifty. At least fourteen people contributed to the songwriting, at least thirteen to the recording, and more to the protest singing. While Ding Dong Dollar is a piece of Scottish history, we believe it as also an American story.

The leader of the songwriting team, Morris Blythman, a language teacher at a Glasgow high school, always said that political songs could not be created in a vacuum; they needed an event to trigger them. Polaris was the trigger. In addition to Polaris, their songs targeted President Kennedy, the White House, Captain R.B. Laning (commander of the first depot ship at the Holy Loch, the Proteus), Wall Street, and even Billy Graham, a then-recent Scottish visitor. All infused a sense of humor into their calls for action.

Ohio Regional Music Arts and Cultural Outreach (ORMACO) and the Friends of the Secrest Arboretum close out their summer Music at the Arboretum concert series on Friday, August 18, 2023, with Avon Lake-based musician Jerry Popiel, in a program that will feature popular tunes from singer-songwriters from the 1960s and 1970s, including Simon & Garfunkel, James Taylor, Jim Croce, Dan Fogelberg, Cat Stevens and others.

The song was released in November 1960 and a few months later climbed to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, selling over a million copies. It was the first ever number one hit sang by a black girl group. A decade later Carole King performed the song on her milestone album Tapestry.

Bob Dylan started his career in the early 1960s with songs that defined social issues such as the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights Movement. During this time the rebellion against mainstream society was rising amongst the youth as they adopted alternative lifestyles as a way of achieving self-transformation.

In 1962, Dylan began to use his music in order to show the experiences of injustice within American society. These political protest songs drew attention to a specific incident or a political issue. As politicians continued to send more and more troops to Vietnam, Americans began to question the involvement of the United States and expressed their disapproval openly.

The songs of Bob Dylan during the 1960s represented the concerns and ideas of the rebellious youth counterculture that were dealing with issues like the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights Movement. His lyrics came right out of the song with a really deep message for the audience to think about. Unlike other folk singers of his time like Woody Guthrie and Joan Baez, Dylan sold his lyrics outside the normal folk audience and reached the mass teen audience.

1960 kicked off a special era in music that featured hits by Elvis Presley, Etta James, and Phil Everly. Some of the best 1960 wedding songs are included on this list of favorites, and you will find multiple styles of music represented here to suit every taste.

The King of Rock and Roll Elvis Presley has lent his recorded voice to many wedding celebrations, and this catchy hit from 1960 is sometimes used as an alternative recessional. The song is also a great one to use as you and your new spouse are cutting the wedding cake.

Wedding songs can be simple statements of love and affection, just like this classic from Cliff Richard and The Shadows. The powerful but simple message of the song is clear, so use it when the guests have their full attention focused on the bride and groom.

This was one of the final songs recorded by Buddy Holly before he was tragically killed in a plane crash, and it remains a popular expression of sincere love. Holly recorded the song for his own wife, and it can be used as a nice dedication from the groom to his bride.

This song by Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs is so popular that it has been used in many films including Dirty Dancing. The song is one that will contribute a little bit of variety to the list of songs you have chosen for your wedding reception.

Phil Everly penned this tune and released it in 1960 before Linda Ronstadt had a huge hit with it a few years later. This is a song that couples like to play as they enter the reception hall for the first time as a man and wife, or it can simply be added to the playlist for dancing.

This is an old Spanish song that was modernized by Jimmy Sweeney in 1960, and the song was also covered by Elvis Presley during his career. It is the perfect song to have played for the bride at the wedding reception, and some grooms even choose to sing it themselves. ff782bc1db
