Himali Delanka-Pedige, PhDÂ
Assistant Professor
Dr. Himali Delanka-Pedige is an assistant professor in the School of Civil, Environmental, and Infrastructure Engineering at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale (SIUC). She received her PhD and MS in Environmental Engineering from New Mexico State University, following her BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. Prior to joining SIUC, she served as a post-doctoral researcher at New Mexico State University. Â
Her research interests encompass a wide range of environmental engineering topics, including wastewater treatment, water quality assessment, wastewater pathogens, trace organic characterization, water reuse, resource recovery, algal-based treatment processes, advanced treatment, treatment process modeling, and sustainable wastewater infrastructures.Â

I am a Graduate Research Assistant at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC), where I am currently enrolled in the Master's program in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Environmental Engineering. I earned my Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from Thapathali Campus, Institute of Engineering, Tribhuvan University.Â
My current research investigates an innovative algal-based approach for the treatment of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD), with a focus on the concurrent recovery of beneficial resources. My dedication to sustainability and water resource management drives me to develop practical and environmentally responsible solutions that benefit both human society and the natural world.Â
Tharindu Nawarathna Â
MS Student
Tharindu Nawarathna is a Master's Graduate Fellowship recipient at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC), where he is pursuing a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Environmental Engineering. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Structural Engineering from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka.
His current research explores the feasibility of cultivating algae in microplastic-impacted environments, with an emphasis on evaluating its potential for sustainable biofuel production. His academic interests include Environmental Engineering, water and wastewater treatment, biological treatment processes, microplastic pollution, and resource recovery. As a graduate student, he is dedicated to advancing innovative and sustainable approaches to address global environmental challenges.Â
Eimtiaz Ibne Easin  Â
MS Student
Eimtiaz Ibne Easin is a Graduate Research Assistant at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC), where he is pursuing a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Environmental Engineering. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST), Dhaka, Bangladesh, and has previously worked as an Environmental Engineer in Bangladesh.
His research explores the feasibility of using algae to degrade waste bioplastics, with a focus on resource recovery from the process. His interests include water and wastewater treatment, water quality monitoring, resource recovery from wastewater, and waste-to-energy.
