Steve Lee ATC CSCS LMT is the owner of a wide array of small businesses that mostly center around his career as an Athletic Trainer, Strength Coach and Massage Therapist. Steve believes that a lot of his work ethic and drive derives from a background working in his experiences as a child in his family’s business. He is focused on promoting the profession of athletic training as a great foundation for opportunities and growth.

Laboratory Case Studies in Diagnostic Microbiology

These case studies will provide examples of how the microbiology laboratory is a key healthcare team member in the diagnosis and management of infectious diseases.

Dr. A. Christian Whelen

Dr. A. Christian Whelen joined Diagnostic Laboratory Services, Inc. (DLS) in April 2018 as Vice President and Technical Director of the Microbiology and Molecular Laboratories.  He presently serves as Scientific Affairs Advisor.  DLS provides medical testing services with locations throughout Hawaii, Saipan and Guam. 


Prior to DLS, he was the Director of the Hawaii DOH State Laboratories for 12 years and is Past President of the Association of Public Health Laboratories.  Dr. Whelen retired from the US Army as a Lieutenant Colonel after serving 20 years on active duty directing various military laboratories. 

 

He holds BS and PhD degrees in microbiology, did a postdoctoral fellowship at Mayo Clinic, and is board certified by the American Board of Medical Microbiology.  Adjunct appointments at the University of Hawaii include Professor of Pathology, Professor of Public Health, and Affiliate Graduate Faculty in Microbiology.

Hawaiʻi Youth Food Council

The Hawai‘i Youth Food Council (HYFC) is a group of motivated students from public, charter, and independent high schools from across the State of Hawai‘i. HYFC is a program of the Hawai‘i Farm to School Hui and Hawai‘i Public Health Institute. We envision a Hawai‘i where youth are engaged and empowered in creating healthy, local food systems that instill a sense of place and purpose for all people in connection with the ‘āina. COS van der Voort has been with the FBI for 11 years providing outreach to various communities within Hawaii, serves as backup to the public affairs specialist and is a member of the FBI's Evidence Response Team.  SA Asato has been with the FBI for 22 years and worked on Asian organized crime, health care fraud, white collar crime, and public corruption.  SA Asato currently serves as the Joint Terrorism Task Force Coordinator and the Senior Team Leader of the FBI's Evidence Response Team.

Diagnostic Laboratory Services- Urinalysis Skills Workshop 

This workshop will provide an introduction to Urinalysis via presentation and hands-on activity.  

Aulani Green & Angela Hose

Aulani Green has over 10 years of experience in the laboratory.  Her career began as a Medical Laboratory Technician in the Microbiology department.  She joined Diagnostic Laboratory Services in 2019 as a trainer in Workforce Planning. In this position, she trains MLT and MT students during their clinical rotations in the laboratory.  


Angela Hose Joined Diagnostic Laboratory Services in 1998 and has worked in the laboratory for over 20 years.  Her journey began as a lab assistant before moving into the role of Medical Laboratory Technician.  A job in Workforce Planning sparked her interest to serve as a trainer.  In 2019, Angela found herself faced with an opportunity to advance her career within the department and accepted the offer for the Supervisor, Training, Development & Outreach role. In this position she leads her team of trainers, as well as partners with educational intuitions and continuing with outreach efforts in High School Health Pathway Programs to raise awareness about careers in the laboratory.

Seizure Recognition and First Aid Certification Training

While everyone should know basic seizure first aid, becoming Seizure First Aid Certified takes you further. You will learn how to recognize signs of a seizure and how to use the basic first aid steps in different settings, for different seizure types and when medical help may be needed. Participants who complete the training will earn a digital certificate and can redeem a badge in Tallo.

Presenter:  Naomi Manuel, Executive Director, Epilepsy Foundation

Naomi Manuel was born and raised on Maui but is currently living on Oahu. Naomi has been an education specialist with a passion for public health awareness, outreach, education and advocacy. She is a graduate of the University of Hawai’i at Manoa and comes from a diverse background within the non-profit sector; contributing to various curricula and community programming specific to Hawai’i youth and families.

Stop The Bleed Certification

Stop the Bleed teaches easy to learn life-saving first-aid when it’s needed most. Whether at work or play, accidents can happen anywhere and knowing how to control bleeding is an essential skill. In Stop the Bleed, students learn how to apply pressure or use a tourniquet to slow down or stop life-threatening bleeding until emergency personnel arrive. Our vision is to empower all people of Hawaii with the knowledge to stop bleeding and help save a life.  Participants will earn Stop the Bleed Certification that they can add to their Tallo profiles

Presenter:  Tina "TJ" Donayri, Clinical Coordinator Injury Prevention/Outreach & Education Trauma Service The Queen's Medical Center

TJ Donayri is an emergency department nurse/trauma nurse by trade with over 15 years of experience. TJ transitioned into her current role 4years-ago as the Clinical Coordinator for Injury Prevention/Outreach & Education for the Trauma Service Department at The Queen’s Medical Center. Along with Injury Prevention initiatives, TJ is also engaged in community outreach and rural education to the outer islands. TJ is currently enrolled at George Washington University, completing her Master’s in Science Health Science for Clinical Operations and Healthcare Management. TJ also serves as the Hawaii State Emergency Nurses Association president and is passionate about community engagement to reduce health disparities.

Emergency and Critical Care Pharmacists

Learn about the role of clinical pharmacists in emergency and critical care. These pharmacists work with the medical team in emergency departments and in intensive care units to provide rapid drug information in acute settings.

Dr. Nicole Young is an Associate Professor and Pharmacy Practice Department Chair at the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy, University of Hawaii at Hilo. She practices and teaches pharmacy students in the Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit at The Queen's Medical Center.

Cherie Chu, PharmD, BCCCP

Dr. Cherie Chu is an Associate Professor at the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy, University of Hawaii at Hilo. She practices and teaches pharmacy students in the Intensive Care Unit at Castle Medical Center.

Sheri Tokumaru, PharmD, BCCCP

Dr. Sheri Tokumaru is an Associate Professor and Director of Interprofessional Education at the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy, University of Hawaii at Hilo. She also practices and teaches pharmacy students in the Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit at The Queen's Medical Center.
