Our current location was established in fall of 2020. Robert, my husband of 25 years, built our house and barn with the help of our teenage son and some wonderful family and friends who have given sacrificially to help us make this dream a reality. I grew up on a dairy farm and hog operation and have been in love with farming the majority of my life. Robert and I met in high school and were both FFA Officers and worked on dairy farms. After graduating, we continued to work on the farm while Robert started college. A year later after trying to work long hours on the farm with a baby, I decided to leave my herdsman position. Robert started teaching industrial arts at a high school in 2004 and I graduated from beauty school. We bought a house in Kiel, WI and I became an avid gardener.
In 2012 our 8 year old son, Taylor started raising rabbits for meat and we also bought laying hens. We were so happy to be raising livestock and teach our kids animal husbandry. Our little farm added our first 2 boer goats in 2015. Two years later I started selling vegetables and expanded my gardens. Soon after that we started looking for land with hopes to build our farm. We purchased 25 acres in Cascade, WI and started construction the following summer. Beef cattle were added to the operation shortly before moving in and the new gardens were established.
In 2024 I was able to retire from 20 years of hairdressing and go full-time on the farm. Currently we are selling beef directly to the consumers in our community. We also offer eggs and vegetables in our self-serve refrigerator. We continue to expand the goat enterprise on the farm until we reach a breeding herd of 120 does. Robert continues to work off the farm.
In the past decade we have developed a completely different outlook on farming through research and education and have changed the course of our farming practices to focus on soil health as the foundation of our decision making process. We have worked very hard to start this farm and are very excited to be serving the community in this way. We look forward to serving you and getting to know the community.
Sincerely,
Angela Boenisch
At Highview Pastures, we believe that soil is the foundation of a good farm. By implementing regenerative practices, we allow our farm to function as a synergistic ecosystem.
Our livestock are raised on intensely managed pasture, which allows waste to be deposited on the soil and the soil surface to be stimulated and trampled, promoting growth of diverse plant species. The diversity of the root systems allows rain infiltration, decreases run-off, and increases the function of soil biology, and nutrient cycling, providing the livestock that graze the pasture ample nutrition. Our pasture management includes targeted periods of rest and growth based on observation of the land and the animals needs.
For the seasons that our livestock cannot be on the land, their waste and bedding is collected and composted to grow our seedlings in and provide our garden with top quality amendments. We operate a low-till garden without the use of herbicides and pesticides, on permanent beds, promoting growth of soil biology and therefore increasing nutrient density of the food produced from our gardens.
All of these management practices work together to produce healthy plants and animals to feed our community.
