Israel has approved a multi-billion-dollar deal to acquire two combat squadrons of fighter jets from the United States, the Defence Ministry announced on Sunday (May 3). The deal comes amid tensions in the Middle East and conflict with Iran. The purchase includes a squadron of F-35 multi-role stealth fighters from Lockheed Martin and another of F-15IA warplanes from Boeing.
In a statement, the ministry said that the deals are valued at tens of billions of shekels and are part of a dedicated 350 billion shekel ($119 billion) budget. It added that the jets “will serve as a cornerstone of the IDF’s long-term force development, addressing evolving regional threats and preserving Israel’s strategic air superiority.”

The purchase of new aircraft would bring the Israeli Air Force’s F-35I fleet to 100 and the F-15IA, the Israeli variant of the advanced F-15EX, fleet to 50.
As of now, Israel has 48 F-35I jets, following an initial order of 50 aircraft. In 2023, another 25 F-35s were ordered, which are expected to be delivered starting in 2028. In 2024, Israel ordered another 25 F-15IA jets, with deliveries expected starting in 2031.
In a statement, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said that the recent war in Iran “once again demonstrated the Israeli Air Force’s power and its decisive role in protecting Israel.”

“The lessons of that campaign require us to keep pressing forward on force buildup, to ensure air superiority for decades to come,” he added.
Defense Ministry director general Amir Baram said that “alongside immediate wartime procurement needs, we have a responsibility to act now to secure the IDF’s military edge ten years from now and beyond.”
“Operation Roaring Lion reinforced just how critical the US-Israel strategic relationship is, and how essential advanced air power remains,” he said, referring to the recent military campaign in Iran.

China issued its first “blocking order” against US sanctions on firms buying Iranian oil, rejecting Washington’s measures as illegal and escalating trade tensions amid stalled US-Iran talks.
In a major escalation in trade tensions between the United States and China, Beijing’s commerce ministry on Saturday (May 2) invoked the first-ever “blocking order” against sanctions imposed by Washington against five firms over the purchase of Iranian oil. China, a key customer of Iranian oil, relies on discounted crude from the Islamic Republic mainly through independent “teapot” refineries. Amid tensions in West Asia, the US had ramped up its economic pressure on Tehran, imposing sanctions on such refineries.
According to the Chinese commerce ministry’s injunction, which relates to sanctions announced separately since last year, the US measures “shall not be recognised, implemented, or complied with.”
In a statement, the ministry added that the sanctions “improperly prohibit or restrict Chinese enterprises from conducting normal economic, trade and related activities with third countries... and violate international law and the basic norms governing international relations.”

“The Chinese government has consistently opposed unilateral sanctions lacking UN authorisation and a basis in international law,” it added.
The injunction applies to three firms in Shandong province: Shandong Jincheng Petrochemical Group, Shandong Shouguang Luqing Petrochemical and Shandong Shengxing Chemical. It also applies to two other companies based elsewhere in China: Hengli Petrochemical (Dalian) Refinery and Hebei Xinhai Chemical Group.
Earlier on Friday (May 1), Washington imposed sanctions on another Chinese firm, Qingdao Haiye Oil Terminal Co., Ltd., for importing “tens of millions of barrels” of Iranian crude oil, generating billions of dollars in revenue for Tehran. The firm was not mentioned in the latest injunction by the Chinese commerce ministry.

The latest sanctions come as talks continue to stall between Washington and Tehran, with no signs of a permanent resolution of the conflict that began when the US and Israel launched joint strikes on Iran on February 28.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump is expected to visit China and hold talks with leader Xi Jinping later this month.

This city, which combines profound traditional Chinese medicine heritage with strong biological research capabilities, serves as a national biopharmaceutical industry base and provides an excellent academic context and innovative soil for exploring the cross-border integration of traditional medicine and modern biotechnology.
The purpose of this conference is to gather top experts, scholars, and researchers in the fields of clinical Chinese medicine, Chinese medicine research and development, and biotechnology from around the world, to jointly focus on the core topic of "Inheritance and Innovation: The Road to Integration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Modern Biotechnology". The conference will deeply discuss the protection and sustainable use of traditional Chinese medicine resources, the screening and action mechanism of active ingredients of traditional Chinese medicine, modern scientific research on acupuncture and moxibustion and massage therapy, new strategies of traditional Chinese medicine for treating chronic diseases, and the application of cutting-edge technologies such as gene editing and big data analysis in traditional Chinese medicine research. Promote the modernization and internationalization of traditional Chinese medicine through multidimensional academic exchanges.
