It takes more than data to help patients and their families navigate the murky waters of living and dyingSeveral years ago, as a new pulmonary/critical care physician, I saw a patient who was severely ill and we discussed their symptoms. Soon after, I launched into a narrative of what might come next. “You’ll probably need a transplant soon,” I said. “But before then, we’ll need another CT scan, and some labs . . . ” Time was tight, so I packed in a few more facts. The patient paused, thanked me, and kindly explained how their religious beliefs meant they were definitely not interested in a transplant. My cheeks grew hot; I had made a blind assumption. My patients cared about more than statistics, and I had better learn. Until that year, I had worked at gleaming academic medical centres on both American coasts.
