About Highland Hospital
Highland Hospital opened its doors in 1927 as the first comprehensive acute care hospital in Oakland. Its mission is to serve and to improve the health of all Alameda County residents, regardless of ability to pay. With its Spanish Baroque architectural style, there was a commitment of "progressive medical care in comfortable surroundings" for its community.
In 1969, a new hospital building was added to the existing site to meet modern facilities' needs.
In the spring of 2016, the hospital renovated its ambulatory and acute towers and added a connector between the "old" and "new" establishments.
As a safety net institution, Highland continues to Alameda County's Level 1 Trauma Center and one of the oldest teaching hospitals on the West Coast. Highland is one of 5 campuses, within Alameda Health System.
