Thinking of Higher Photography?
Welcome to our Photography Course, designed for those who aspire to transform everyday snapshots into powerful, evocative images. In today’s world, cameras are ubiquitous, found in every smartphone and used to chronicle personal experiences on social media. Yet, through this course, you will learn to elevate your photographic practice, exploring the deeper narrative and emotional potential of images.
As digital communication reshapes how we see the world, the value of skilled photography has never been more pronounced. This program will teach you to create compelling images, influencing perceptions and stir emotions.
This intensive course demands dedication, creativity, and a commitment to mastering your craft. You will undertake numerous photoshoots, often requiring you to venture to new locations and collaborate with volunteers, including friends and family, to bring your visions to life. This will be done in your own time. Get ready to embark on a journey that challenges and rewards in equal measure, leaving you with not only enhanced skills but also a profound understanding of photographic impact.
What you will learn
The course is broadly practical in nature. Around 80% of your time will be devoted to practical photographic activities with the remaining time focused on theory to support and guide your practice.
In the beginning, you’ll take part in a set of practical lessons and tasks to build your skills and knowledge. You’ll learn how to plan, set up and carry out professional photoshoots. You'll be continuously assessed throughout these experiences and receive regular feedback on your progress.
You will then be expected to undertake a major, self directed project showcasing your practical skills and understanding of technical skill. This is worth 77% of your overall course award.
In January, you'll sit a Prelim paper exam to test knowledge and understanding of photographic theory and practice from the workshops. This will prepare you for the written exam in May which makes up the remaining 23% of your course award.
How you are assessed
The initial workshops are practical in nature and run within class. These aim to progress your knowledge of the camera, creative and technical abilities. You'll be assessed continually on each and given feedback on your progress to improve your abilities.
Your major project is sent to the SQA in May for marking and accounts for 77% of your course award.
The exam in April/May, is written and test your knowledge of photography theory through multiple choice and extended response questions. This is 30 marks in total and 23% of your final grade.
