UNIT 2 Vocabulary

Grammar Practice: Simple, Compound, Complex, Compound-Complex

Vocabulary Unit 1

Literature Circle Role Sheets-

Wordsmith: Your job is to locate specific words in the text, words that are NOT part of your weekly vocabulary assignment (minimum of 4 words). The idea is to help people learn and remember some interesting or powerful vocabulary words from the story. You are to locate the words within the text, find and write the dictionary definition and explain in 2-3 sentences how the word is used in context. Share your work with your group.

Summarizer: Your job is to prepare a brief summary (2 paragraphs) of today's reading. Your group discussion will start with your 1-2 minute statement that covers the key points, main highlights, general idea and essence of today's reading assignment. Your group will be counting on your statement to start the discussion at each meeting.

Investigator: Your job is to dig up some background information on an aspect of the assigned reading. For example, you might learn about a reference or an allusion made by the author. This is NOT a formal research project. The idea is to find information that interests you and helps the group to better understand the characters, setting and plot of the book. (1-2 paragraphs)

Connector: Your job is to find connections between the book and the outside world. You may connect to your own experiences or to current or past real world events and experiences. You may also connect the reading to other works of literature, music, art and/or media. Write your thoughts in 1-2 paragraphs.

Discussion Director: Your job is to lead the group in discussing and completing open-ended discussion questions related to the assigned reading. Direct the discussion by asking each member for their input based on their current role. You may discuss some of the questions provided for you as well as developing your own questions. You also need to write the answers to these questions. (Minimum of 3 questions)

Illustrator: Your job is to draw a story board consisting of 3-4 panels related to the reading. It can be about something that you read, or something that the reading reminded you of, or an element of the story (plot character, setting, etc.) Presentation Plan: When the Discussion Director invites you to participate, show your picture without comment. Let the group discuss your picture. The picture must be neat and on unlined paper.

GRAMMAR REVIEW FOR QUIZ NOTES

1. An action verb is a verb that expresses physical or mental action.

2. Prepositional phrases are groups of words containing prepositions. Remember that prepositions are words that indicate the relationships between various elements within a sentence, and you’ll never have difficulty identifying prepositional phrases.

3. Adjectives are descriptive words that modify nouns. (How many, which one, what kind)

4. An adverb is a word that modifies (describes) a verb, an adjective, another adverb, or even a whole sentence. (LY is often a clue)

5. An infinitive will almost always begin with “to” followed by the simple form of the verb, like this: To + Verb = Infinitive.

6. Prepositions often tell you where something is or when something happened.

7. A direct object receives the action of the verb. In other words, it is the thing being acted upon. Only action verbs can have direct objects.

8. We use personal pronouns in place of the person or people that we are talking about.

9. A conjunction is a part of speech that is used to connect words, phrases, clauses, or sentences.

10. Helping verbs or auxiliary verbs such as will, shall, may, might, can, could, must, ought to, should, would, used to, need are used in conjunction with main verbs to express shades of time and mood.
