If you want pristine, uncolored audio fidelity and a wide soundstage for critical listening at home or in the studio, choose HIFIMAN XS Full-Size Over-Ear; if you need versatile wireless connectivity with active noise cancellation and all-day battery life for commuting or office work, choose CMF BY NOTHING Headphone Pro Active.
• HIFIMAN Edition XS: Delivers audiophile-grade clarity via planar magnetic drivers and stealth magnet technology but requires a wired connection and lacks active noise cancellation. Best for stationary listening where sound quality is the only priority.
• CMF BY NOTHING Headphone Pro: Offers modern convenience with Bluetooth 5.4, 50 hours of ANC playtime, and customizable spatial audio, though it uses dynamic drivers that prioritize bass response over absolute neutrality. Ideal for travelers and remote workers needing versatility.
• The Verdict: Pick the HIFIMAN if your laptop setup is a dedicated listening station; pick the CMF if you need headphones that move with you through different environments.
The HIFIMAN Edition XS is built for the listener who treats music as an event rather than background noise. Its core identity revolves around the proprietary Stealth Magnet Technology and the NEO supernano Diaphragm (NsD). The NsD is significantly thinner than previous iterations, which translates to a lightning-fast driver response. This allows the headphone to render intricate details in complex tracks without the muddiness often found in standard dynamic drivers. When you put these on, the goal is total immersion in the recording, placing you right in the center of the performance.
This product is designed specifically for users who value accuracy above all else. The frequency response spans from 8Hz to 50kHz, capturing sub-bass rumble and airy highs that many consumer headphones simply cut off. Because it is an open-back design, there is no seal to trap heat or pressure against your ears, provided you have a quiet environment. The build utilizes a lightweight, ergonomically accurate headband with memory foam padding, ensuring that long sessions do not become painful. However, this design choice means you will hear everything happening around you, and anyone near you will hear what you are listening to.

You should buy the HIFIMAN Edition XS if your primary use case involves a desktop or laptop setup in a controlled space. It excels when connected via the included 3.5mm cable to a dedicated DAC or high-quality source. The impedance is low enough at 18 Ohms that it can be driven by standard ports, yet the sensitivity ensures a rich, full-range output. If you are a producer, an audiophile, or someone who listens to classical and jazz in a quiet room, this is the tool for the job. You should skip this model if you need to block out a noisy commute, if you require wireless freedom, or if you frequently take your audio gear to shared spaces where sound leakage is a problem.
The CMF BY NOTHING Headphone Pro Active is engineered for the modern, mobile user who demands features alongside their sound. It brings Bluetooth 5.4 to the table, offering a stable connection with a range of up to 10 meters. This isn't just about skipping wires; it is about integrating seamlessly into a digital ecosystem. The inclusion of LDAC support and Dual Hi-Res Certification means it can transmit high-resolution audio files wirelessly without the compression artifacts common in standard Bluetooth codecs. For those using a laptop with limited ports or a tablet that needs to switch between calls and media instantly, this flexibility is non-negotiable.
Comfort and endurance are central to its design philosophy. With up to 50 hours of playback time with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) enabled, or even longer with it turned off, these headphones are built to survive long flights, deep work sprints, or marathon gaming sessions. The memory foam earpads and cap-friendly headband ensure they remain comfortable throughout the day. The adaptive ANC provides up to 40 dB of noise reduction, effectively silencing the hum of an airplane engine or the chatter of a busy coffee shop. There is also a Transparency Mode that lets ambient sound in when you need to hear announcements or talk to a colleague without removing the headphones.
This product is ideal for students, commuters, and remote professionals who need a "best headphone for laptop" experience that doubles as a travel companion. The ability to toggle between modes, control volume via touch, and access spatial audio makes it a powerful tool for productivity and entertainment alike. You should buy the CMF BY NOTHING if you need a device that adapts to your environment, blocks out distractions, and lasts all week on a single charge. However, if you are purist who hates any form of digital processing or electronic coloration, the heavy reliance on software EQ and ANC algorithms might feel like too much interference with the raw signal.

In my opinion, the choice comes down to whether you treat your audio gear as a permanent fixture or a mobile extension of yourself. If you are setting up a dedicated listening station for laptop usage in a quiet room where you want to hear every nuance of a recording, the HIFIMAN Edition XS is the superior technical achievement. The planar magnetic drivers offer a level of detail and soundstage width that wireless technology simply cannot match today. However, if you need a pair of headphones that can handle a busy office, a noisy subway, or a long flight while still delivering crisp, Hi-Res audio, the CMF BY NOTHING Headphone Pro Active is the more practical and versatile choice. I would buy the CMF for daily life because the combination of ANC, wireless freedom, and massive battery life solves real-world problems that the HIFIMAN cannot address.
The CMF BY NOTHING Headphone Pro Active is better suited for sports due to its secure fit and wireless nature, whereas the HIFIMAN Edition XS is a heavy, wired over-ear model not designed for movement.
No, the HIFIMAN Edition XS has a low impedance of 18 Ohms and decent sensitivity, meaning it can be driven directly by most laptops, smartphones, and standard DACs without extra amplification.
Yes, the CMF supports Bluetooth 5.4 and AUX connections, making it compatible with Windows PCs, though you may experience slight latency typical of wireless audio unless you use the wired option.
While prices fluctuate, the CMF offers more features like ANC, wireless connectivity, and a carrying case for the price point, whereas the HIFIMAN charges for specific driver technology and build quality rather than electronics.
